Re-installing windows98 after formatting the hardrive on another PC.

I have a Fujitsu Stylistic 1200 Tablet PC, and it does not have either a floppy drive, or a CD-rom on it. I need to re-install windows 98 on it.
I have removed my 4Gb hardrive out of the Tablet PC and installed it (using a 2.5"-3.5" adapter) in my desktop, formatted it, and copied the entire windows98SE CD onto it.
I re-installed the hardrive in the Tablet PC, and keep getting the error message "invalid system disk".
I put it back in the desktop, and tried the "sys d:" (since it was a second hardrive in the desktop) command to make it a bootable drive.
I still got the same message after putting the hardrive back in the Tablet: "invalid system disk".
I also tried to copy the entire windows98 start-up floppy files onto the drive, without success.

How do I make this hardrive boot into DOS, without a CD or Floppy drive?
I talked with a more knowledgeable person, and he told me to make it a bootable disk when I format it, ("format d:/s"), and not afterwards, like I ended up doing in the first try.

Anyone have any other ideas, it would be greatly appreciated!

The most likely problem is that the partition on the drive is not set as "Active". All versions of FDISK from MS have the same problem of not allowing you to set a partition on any drive but the first as "Active". You need to get another partition program that doesn't have this limitation. Alternately you need to make this drive the first drive temporarily. Just make a windows 98 start disk and put it in your desktop machines floppy. Then temporarily unplug your main drive and put the 1200's drive with adaptor in its place. You may have a jumper on the adaptor to set as master or the drive may already be set that way. Easiest just to make the 1200's drive the only drive on that IDE cable. Then once you boot from the floppy, make sure you can see the 1200's HD. Then run FDISK, and set the drives partition as "Active". You might want to do the SYS C: command over as well as long as you have everything hooked up. Now the drive should be able to boot your 1200 and you can run setup from the directory with the windows cab files.

Note, setup will run much faster if you make a config.sys on the 1200's C: that loads himem.sys. Also it can't hurt to add smartdrv.exe to the autoexec.bat. Make dure these are available, that can be copied from another win98 machine under the windows directory.

bergin:

go to http://ranish.com/part and download Ranish Partition Manager.

connect the harddrive to your desktop.

run Partition manager from a real DOS prompt, not a DOS window.

read all the help screens before you change anything.

be sure you know how the program works, then set the drive to bootable (active) using Partition Manager.

you do not neet to partition and format d:/s again.

COUTION: BE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO USE THE PROGRAM BEFORE CHANGING ANYTHING. if you make changes on your 'c' drive by mistake, you will do much work to fix it.

after partition and format, etc, i always make a folder for each driver and each program and let windows only install windows programs in the Program Files folder.

i then copy all the setup files for each program to their own folder.

you do not need to copy the whole windows 98se cd to the harddrive. just copy the directory 'win98'.

after you setup win98, then you can find all your drivers and setup programs easily.

have fun,

I followed PeteB's instructions, and I thought it was all good to go. I was able to start the windows98 install on the Tablet Pc, after copying the files from the CD to the hardrive, while the hardrive was installed in my desktop.

I started setup on the Tablet, from a DOS prompt, and the windows98 setup started. After windows98 was done copying the files, the computer restarted, as it usually would, but then there was another problem. I get the following message: " Disk I/O error, replace the disk and press any key". I'm stumped. Could it be that the hardrive is somehow defective? I don't have another one to play around with, otherwise I would try it.

On a side note, I originally wanted to re-install windows because I had a problem with the sound card. After removing and re-installing the sound card many times, I still had no playback devices, or volume controls, even though there were no known problems detected by windows.
Also, after having this problem with the sound card, I was unable to sucessfully defrag the hardrive. The defrag would start, and minutes later, it would display the message:"drive's contents changed, restarting". It would do this for hours on end, sometimes getting further done thje defragmentation then other times.

I will try to format the hardrive again tuesday evening (2AM right now) and try to re-install windows, once again. I will post any results I may get.
If you have any other ideas or insight, let me know.Thank you for your help, greatly appreciated!

I got the same I/O error when I was setting up my Point 1600. It occured after the first reboot during the Win98 setup.

I fixed it by simply SYSing the laptop HD again from my desktop computer (using a desktop/laptop adapter). Luckily, once it was back in the tablet it continued through the setup as if nothing had happened. (very strange error and did not occur when I was setting up my Stylistic 2300...)

Well, SYSing the hardrive in a desktop after the initial Windows 98 installation process worked. I finished the installation without any problems.

But, windows shows the hardrive as being 405MB in size, even though it is a 4.1Gb hardrive. I must have done something wrong when I FDISKed the hardrive. I remember seeing that 400Mb listed when i partitioned it.

How do I get it to show that it is 4.1Gb, not 405Mb?
Any help is greatly appreciated, again!

I finally figured it out. I had partitioned the hardrive in an old 486 computer.
After Fdisking and formatting the hardrive on my P-4 computer, all went well, and I did not get a disk I/O error message after the initial windows98 files installation. And the disk shows as a 4Gb.

Thanks to all that have helped me with this problem.
Have a great day!
