Linux (redhat 9) Installation Problems
Having problems installing redhat 9 on my ST1200

Hullo folks, i'd like any help I can get installing red hat on my St1200. I've persued most of the threads here and it is clear that a) red hat 9 is workable on the St1200 and B) it should be relatively easy to do.

here's what I got. I pulled the HD out of the St1200 and put it into a dell inspiron 5000C (celeron 450mhz). From there i installed linux using a custom install, but going with with the standard partitions:

/dev/hda1 ext3 103MB
/dev/hda2 ext3 37667MB
/dev/hda3 swap 384MB

the installation went fine on the dell, i made sure to use lowres (i.e. 640x480) minimal colors and had it boot straight to text i.e. no X or GNOME.

after checking out the install on the dell, everything seemed to be in order, i moved the HD back to the ST1200.

there it booted up and after the initial BIOS screen (where it shows the specs), it freezes and shows a capital letter "L"

i have a keyboard attached.

for the record, I am a total linux newbie, i have significant unix admin (not build) and windows experience.

any help would be appreciated.

it is red hat 9, ST1200 with a 40GB Hard drive installed (which the BIOS is recognizing)

Well, I am kind of suprised that the computer recognizes the 40gig drive.

How did you have your bios configured to recognize the drive before?

Did you have a drive overlay running?

Other than those questions, all I know is that I installed RH9 using the bootfloppy and a USB cdrom drive.

Worked fine...but SLOW.

I guess I should have mentioned that I have a 20gig drive in my fuji, and I had to modify the BIOS otherwise it would not even POST.

well there is a new twist to the whole deal. i managed to get it to recognize the HD, the only problem is when it boots, after i select text mode (or let it roll into x) from LILO, it shows the linux loading prompt, followed by about 3 seconds of disk activity and then it reboots! arghghr.

as far as the 40GB, there was another guy on this board who managed to get it running with a 40GB, basically you max out the cylinder count and it has no problem recognizing the drive.

any ideas on the reboot problem? I have a feeling it is linux related...

Ok I thought you were saying it wouldn't get past bios in the boot.

I would suggest you use a floppy or cdrom, but it sounds like you have none of those...it is also possible to install linux rh9 using a boot floppy and network load...I never got that going.

I really think that it has to do with the disk partitions and LILO, if you could reinstall while the Drive is in the fuji...

In the linux documentation project there are some faqs for installing linux with various handicaps. I suggest looking there.

I am sitting here trying to remember if I had any problems, and none come to mind from my install with floppy and usb disk.

OK, after some experimenting I think I figured out the problem with RH9. The laptop I was using to install linux on is a Dell Inspiron Pentium II. the ST1200 is a bog-standard pentium 120 MHz. What was happening was during the install, the installation compiled the kernel and supporting libraries for the 686 processor, which has a few tidbits that aren't backwards compatible. A friendly soul pointed me in the right direction and I installed the 586 images for a few libraries, and I got quite a bit further along. however, it is a real pain in the backside to go through and update all these libraries, SO I was wondering if anyone out there in Radioland knows how to force RH9 (or any linux for that matter) to compile for a specified processer. I know the information is out there, but i have had no luck finding specifics.

Additionally, I installed the minicd version of debian, it worked very well. the wierd part was, the first time I installed it, i installed the base installable, pulled out the hard drive and got nothing. I put it back into the laptop, and ran all the configuration programs on the laptop, and then when i put it back into the ST1200, it worked well.

I'd prefer to get RH9 working, but I'm going to full around with debian as well. Thanks in advance to anyone who can point me in the right direction on the compilation question!!

I'm about to get a bunch of 1200s that would otherwise be dumpster fill, thus I found this site...

Try gentoo linux, the distro is based around optimization - I use it on most of my machines:

I want to use one of these Stylistics in the kitchen for recipes & browsing.
