ST1200 Hard Drive Issues
Issues with the HD in the ST1200

Hullo peoples, the saga never ends. So today I managed to get everything working with Linux on the St1200, except that I screwed up the partitioning, so I decided to reinstall it from scratch. BIG MISTAKE since after I took the HD out to put linux, reinstalled the OS, the St1200 refused to accept ANY hard drives i put into the unit. I went so far as to dig out the original 2.1 GB HD that came with the ST1200 and put that bad boy in there, to no avail.

the problem seems to be hardware related. When the BIOS screen comes up, it either can;t see the Hard Drive (in the case of the larger, non standard HD's i've been fooling around with) or when I set it to autodetect for the 2.1GB, it misreads it and comes up with some really bizarre cylinder/head/sector counts. Bottom line, either the BIOS is flaky (which i find ver hard to believe since i have done nothing to that) or something else is wrong. I read on one of these posts that someone was having IDE connector problems, could this be a manifestation of this ? I don't believe in voodoo magic, but could Linux have done something to the BIOS ? I know that can't be the case, but you never no.

any guidance, much appreciated. Also, any source of IDE connector cables would be appreciated, that would be a good, low budget way to determine if that was the problem...

best regards,

-k

kincyc:

try this on your Stylistic:

attach a keyboard.

go into the bios setup main page.

go down to IDE HARD DISK DRIVE SUBMENU.

for Show HDD Parameters, do NOT press enter

go to HDD Configuration. set this to 'User Defined'.

set Cylanders to '4200'.

set Heads to '16'.

set Sectors per track to '63'.

set Write Precomp to '0'

set Multisector Transfers to '16 sectors'.

set LBA Mode Control to 'Enabled'

set Transfer Mode to 'Fast PIO 1'.

escape out and save changes & exit.

when the Stylistic reboots, do not worry about what the screen shows for harddrive size.

Have fun:
