st1200 linux image request
Wanted: st1200 linux disk image for download...

Would anyone running linux on their st1200 (with pen, audio, and pcmcia nic support) be willing to share an image of the HD? I have recently acquired a working hh and intend to use it as an mp3 network appliance (homepod).

I don't have sound working (haven't tried yet), but PCMCIA is working, as is the pen driver in XFree86. I'm running Debian (sid), stock 2.4.18 install kernel (though I'm going to build a new kernel soon). Once I've got the sound drivers working, I'll see if I can get a gzipped image of the drive to fit on a CD for you. I've got some software installed already, but not too much... I could probably just uninstall most of it so the image will be smaller and more generic. Let me know if you're interested.

I may or may not be getting my 1200 back into service with Debian Sid, if I do I'll see about imaging it. Or at the very least sticking the relevant config files somewhere. All you'd really need is the kernel .config, XF86Config, and maybe a couple other misc files.

Thanks for the reply but I couldn't wait ;)
I was too lazy to remove the hd from the unit, thus I opted for ZipSlack. I missed the old Slackware days anyhow - Gentoo isn't for everything and there is no ZipDeb (Slackware acceptance of rpm's is nice too)....got sound, pcmcia, ethernet, X, and pen working.
Now I'm trying to decide on a good browser - initially I wanted to avoid X alltogether and use links-browser in svga mode. Unfortunately, I could not get the pen to work using supported drivers AND links does NOT really support file associations (perhaps it will be inluded in future releases). My next option also fell short; dillo does support plugins but I have yet to find an existing xmms or even mpg321 plugin. (I don't want to write one unless I absolutely have to).

I've actually found Konqueror to be a good, fast browser. You do have to install a large bit of the KDE distribution to use it, but you don't have to use KDE itself to use konq. It's pretty quick and much faster than Firefox on my 3500 and 2300. Haven't tried it on my 1200 as it's still hanging on the wall as an ornament, but it'd probably still be faster. It's probably the fastest fully-featured browser out there for Linux, although you might give galeon or a couple other gecko-based browsers a try.

Dillo is good and fast but I found it to be less useful than even Netscape 2 for browsing. If you like it though, use it :)

Agreed - Konqueror is a nice browser; I'm partial to Firefox myself. Since I am using the 1200 as a gnump3d client of another machine on the same network, I think my best bet will be to simply display wm (I could even use something nicer like xfce4) and browser to the handheld from the gnump3d host and associate audio/* with "rsh 1200 xmms...". That way I can use a browser that supports js (I plan to make a gnump3d style which includes a js keyboard for use with stylus). I'm also hoping to pear down the install to 256mb so I can use a cf card with ide adapter and get rid of the 2.5" drive (quiet!); I'm hoping removal of wm and browser will get me there. Perhaps I could put dirs such as /usr and /var on nfs to get under 256mb...
Thus far, I am pleased with the onbard sb and display. I will have to fiddle with pen calibration - if anyone has good parameters for XF86Config, please let me know.
Anyhow, I'll post the completed project details here once complete.
