You may also be able to transfer files by putting them on a CF card, and plugging it into a PCMCIA slot with an adapter.
Be warned that I had some problems trying to do this on a ThinkPad with Win95, but I never figured out whether the cause was bad drivers, or bad hardware on the "ebay special" Thinkpad. Run md5sum against the files to verify correct transfer.
But, if you can do it, rawker's idea is better: get the drive connected to a desktop machine. It's faster, easier, and you can back up the hard drive before experimenting.
