I've read through the other threads on the list and I hope I'm not repeating anything so here goes.

I've got a 2300 with 160 mb RAM and a 30GB disk that runs fine. I also have a spare 4 GB disk for testing.

I DON'T have the CD or Floppy drives for it.

So to get the OS on the HDD I installed 2Kpro with the 30 gb disk in an old PC then dumped it in the 2300 and it detects the drive fine but after the post boot screen comes up there's just a flashing cursor in the top left of the screen.

I read the post about damaged drive cables so I connected the 4GB HDD which only has DOS 6.22 on it and it booted fine.
Tried the 2k one again and the same thing happened.

Thinking that 2k might be too stupid to deal with the change in hardware (tho I had expexted it to boot a little way at least) took the 30GB disk and installed XP Tablet on it with it in the old PC then took it back and put it in the 2300 and tried to boot.

The same thing happened, flashing cursor in the top left corner.

I've messed with it for ages and for the life of me can't think what it's doing as you can hear it try to access the disk a number of times before giving up. I've even tried fdisk /mbr just in case there was something screwy there but it made no difference.

After all that I took the 30GB disk back to the old PC and it booted fine.

The final test. In the same PC I Fdisked the 30GB disk and installed DOS 6.22 and then put it back in the 2300, and of course it booted first time.

So the Drive works, the drive cable works, the OS is installed and boots, just not on the 2300.

I installed W98se on the old machine on the 30GB HDD and it booted first time in the 2300 so my question is, why the heck doesn't don't the 2k or XP Tablet ones at least try to boot to where the white line goes across the bottom of the screen?

Any help would be great as I'm stumpped.

Just to add to all that:

I've checked that it is the only partiton on the disk and that it is 'active'.

Does the 2300 have a problem with large primary partitions?

I'll add to this: Since then I've formatted the large drive and made it into two Fat 16 partitions no more than 2GB each.

I installed DOS 6.22 on the first disk with the disk in an old PC and then XCOPYed the XP setup files to the second partition.

I then put the disk back in the 2300 and it booted to DOS first time. I then ran the winnt.exe from the second partition and it looked to start up okay. "Windows is now copying files for setup, etc".

It did that then restarted the unit to continue setup and at that point the white flashing cursor reappared at the top left of the screen.

I blew the partitons away again, reinstalled DOS 6.22 and tried the same thing with WIN 98 and at the same point, when it rebooted, the same thing happened.

I'd happily take a guess from anyone at this point!

Okay, for those interested and / or with the same problem I have sorted this one out.

The problem is not being able to fdisk or format the drive in the 2300 its self due to not having a CD or Floppy drive.

Formatting it in most other machines will let you boot to command.com but won't let you put an NT based OS on it with out it falling over on startup. Win 98 will work but you usually have to re sys c: the drive part way through the install. Ypu can't do this for NT / 2000 or XP so you can't install it this way.

What I did. I went though our business and with an adaptor started to format the 30GB HDD in PC after PC and trying to put an OS on it that way. Eventually I tried it in an IBM ThinkPad A30 and it came up with no problems in the 2300 first boot.

To get all the driver (bar the pen) to work I installed 98se in the thinkpad, put the drive with the XPTablet install files on the HDD into the 2300 and ran an upgrade install.

Took me three weeks to get it going but it comes up fine now.

the problem is the OS reads the hardware on the motherboard during the install. When you move the HD to the tablet the OS get confused because the motherboard is different. SOLUTION: FDISK and FORMAT/S the dive (make sure you add the system files during format. The drive will now boot to the C:>. With the drive in your desktop or laptop reboot to DOS. You will get the C:> prompt. Make directories.. MD (name), change directories.. CD (name) and copy the install disk to the drive from the CD. Also make directories and copy the install files or drivers for your wireless network adapter or other programs you will need on the Pen Tablet since there is no way to get them on the hard drive once you put it in the Tablet.
Re install the hard drive in the Pen Tablet and boot. You will get DOS C:> change directory to the OS and type setup. The OS install will begin.
