I finally finished upgrading my 3400 to Slackware 10.2 (from 10.0) and Freerock gnome 2.12.1 (from 0.2.2-2.20.2), and finally remembered to go in and make sure my fpit_passive installation was still good (/etc/serial.conf, /etc/X11/Xorg.conf, etc.) so the pointer now responds to to the touchscreen, but it's working in no way that I would call intuitive. No matter where I touch the touchscreen, the pointer's bouncing around like a rubber ball, usually at the edges of the screen.

What am I missing?

Incidentally, massive Slackware upgrades over NFS link? Not recommended. For my Slackware 10.0->10.2 and FRG 0.2.2-2.10.2->2.12.1 updates, it took better than 48 hours over a 100 Mbps Ethernet. I might try it over Gigabit someday, but only when I'm reeeeeally bored.

On the ST1200 with Xfree 3.3 or so, I've found that it's all-but-impossible to get the calibration parameters (which have to be edited into the XF86Config file by hand) set up so that the cursor is even in the same ballpark as the pen.

There's a command-line program called fpitcal floating around the net (in source form only, as fpitcal.c, afaik) that might help, if the passive drivers use the same API as the active ones. It spits out raw position reading that you may be able to use to tweak the calibration.
