Anyone have any experience with a bootable PC Card HD?

Hi there all just wanted to ask if anyone has used a bootable PC-card Hard drive to install the OS onto their 1200. The price on these is not that high and if you are doing multiple installations it seems like ti would be easy to just store a image on the PC Card and then write it over to the drive in the 1200 without ever even ahving to take the back HD drive door off.

I seem to recall reading somewhere (either in the Fujitsu documentation or one of the support FAQs) that the 1200 cannot boot from a PC card. I think this question was raised in conjunction with the desire to boot from a PCMCIA CD-ROM interface, and the response was that bios doesn't recognize the card slots as a bootable drive source. Unless there is some way to change the boot sequence in bios, which only looks for the internal HD or floppy, I don't think that you could do it.

On the other hand, isn't it possible to just put all the files on the PC-card and then transfer them to the Fujitsu's HD after it boots to DOS? Or do you need to install drivers first before it will see the PC-card? I'm not that familiar with PC-card HDs.

Can I boot my pen tablet from a device on the PCMCIA slot?

No, the Fujitsu Stylistic 1200, Stylistic 2300, Stylistic LT, Point 510, and Point 1600 do not support booting from a PCMCIA device. So you cannot boot from a Flash card, hard disk drive, or CD-ROM drive attached to the PCMCIA slot.

Drogue_Anathema,
you need install the card services and socket services under dos which is hassle.
more info can get from:
http://www.execpc.com/~sunfish/pcmcia/
you can try PCM+ in Utilities Diskette(don't know it works or not) from
http://www.fujitsu-pc.com/www/support.shtml?support/softwaredownloads/pentabs/st500/st500
or IBM PCDos 7.0 which can install card services and socket services optionally.

Trust me, unless you want to use PC card under Dos desperately, forget about
those services. Use NIC or CompactFlash under Windows to transfer files.

I have quite a bit of experience with bootable PCMCIA hard drives because I also have a Ricoh G-1200s - which uses one - and experience with DOS mode PCMCIA drivers because I've spent a LOT of time configuring PCM+ for the Ricoh, since there are no Win9x drivers that will allow you to access the second PCMCIA slot when booting Win9x from the PCMCIA hard drive in slot 1. If the Stylistic 1200 won't boot off of the PCMCIA slot then JunkLeo is absolutely right - you DON'T want to spend the time and frustration trying to install and configure the DOS PCMCIA drivers - it is a MAJOR pain - almost torture........

His suggestions for for transferring files AFTER the OS is installed are right on as well, though he forgot a few other viable options.

1) Direct Cable Connection or Laplink to another system running Win9x using a Laplink parallel cable or even a null modem serial cable (if you've really got LOTS of time or just a few small files to transfer).
2) You can get a PCMCIA floppy drive like the one that came with the Toshiba Libretto or the Compaq Concerto - both readily available on eBay.
3) You can buy a PCMCIA LS120/3.5" floppy combo drive (I got one for $36 + S&H on eBay)
4) You can hook up a parallel port ZIP drive,

Of course you have to have Win9x installed before any of these options will work. If you have one of these devices, but your version of Windows doesn't have the drivers for it built-in, and you have a browser, and a modem installed you can download drivers for any of these devices off the net to make the drivers install easier........

I have a Libretto Floppy and it does work in the 1200, I installed the drivers and it sees it but you can't access it.
