GROUP BUY: Norand Pen*Key 6622 TFT
I want to get into hacking these....

I was at the local surplus shop yesterday and just discovered these gems. They are like the Fujitsu Stylistics but with much better TFT active matrix screens. The owner offered it for $275 and had 6 left. I can get all six of them for $1200 ($200 each). I really want to get into hacking these, esp because of the possiblity of using the ZV port to play DVDs on the active matrix screen. I need six people to get in on the group buy and I can purchase these. First 6 people to reply. Here are the specs:

Intermec Norand Pen*Key 6622
AMD X5 processor at 133 MHz
Large 8.4" TFT active matrix color VGA display with up to 65,536 colors
touchscreen can be operated with either finger or stylus (analog resistive)
32MB RAM
1 GB hard drive
4Mb IrDAŽ communications
Integrated desktop stand, Sound Blaster PRO
Dual Battery Packs
Ports: 1 PS/2 for Keyboard, 1 Serial, 1 Parallel, 1 External Speaker Connection

The overall dimensions are much smaller than the stylistic

From what I can observe it uses same ram as the stylistic (EDO SODIMM) ofcourse couldn't get inside it =). It has integrated keypad on the right side of screen. The touchscreen works with my finger. Winamp runs fine.

Those interested please email me at bsingh@purdue.edu

I'll pass (I've already got WAY too many 'projects'), but looks like a neat toy. Here's some more info and a photo:

Are we sure it has a ZV port, I didn't see anything about it in the spec sheet.?

The TFT screen sounds attractive, but I'm put off by the fact that it's only a 586. Also, as another poster pointed out, the wife factor is an issue. The other day as I was working my 1200 (adding heatsink) she actually asked me how many computers I need. As if there is some arbitrary limit!

I might be interested if the price is a little lower. I like the fact that it's a pentium processor in that one compared to the AMD.

I'm guessing battery life on these is great considering it holds two of them?

Would be interesting in 6632 depending on price of course. Not a rich man and even less so now that I found this board!

I'm intersted in either 6622 or 6632.
It's good that the 6622 plays mp3s unlike the similarly powered CF-01. Probably due to the built-in sound card vs the PCMCIA solution for the CF-01.

How do the feel as compared with the Stylistic 1200? Look like they're a 1lb lighter !

Just measured the Stylistic and it's really close, 6622/6632 seem slightly (26 vs 28cm) narrower.

As for battery life, my guess is that it's not as "good" as on the Stylistic 1200, since it's got 2 10.8v/1,350ma vs 1 10.8/3,900ma, so that's about one third less !

From the manual:
http://www.intermec.com/manuals/61028103/61028103.htm
One battery pack Approximately 0.8 to 1.5 hours
Two battery packs Approximately 1.5 to 3 hours

No wonder 1200 is so heavy becasue of its battery.

BTW 6632 is my first choice before I bought CF-01 and 1200, it has sound card, TFT screen, and the screen cover(or stand), but the auction of 6632 was $399 on eBay (not the crapping one w/o battery charger or AC addapter currently). So I perfer to buy a new CF-01. I bought 1200 because it is so cheap (thanks for reldridg and jim again). Now should I buy another 6632 after I bought Gateway 6400? Maybe not. But I think it is a very good choice for people who have no 1200 and the price is under $200.

Yeah it seems like half of 1200's weight is in the battery !
Judging by the manufacturers numbers, I'd estimate 6622 life to be around 1/1h30 max while browsing the web wirelessly or playing mp3s. Not sure you can do both at the same time though.
The 1200 is rated at 4/5 hours and it gives about 2hours.
I don't have the CF-01 but some have reported a battery life of 45minutes under similar circumstances instead of the 2/3 hours per the manufacturer.
It seems you can pretty much divide battery life by two to get real life numbers

PS - ne1 know what the CF-01 battery's amps are ? Can't find the exact number but it's probably in the 2000ma zone.

The 1200 is rated at 4/5 hours and it gives about 2hours.

Try not to extrapolate on anecdotal data. I get 4 hours out of it easily. Sometimes I don't charge it for days and only use it sporadically and it holds the charge fine and still lasts. Hook it up with an ethernet PCMCIA card for web browsing, still haven't gotten a wireless setup.

Also, estimating battery life on a 6622 when you've never seen one isn't a good idea.

Is there a reason you've switched ID's?

Still you old aggressive self eh ?!

I'm not extrapolating, I'm using anecdotal evidence based on user experience and battery ratings. Do you have a problem with that ?

PS - Congrats on noticing that I've changed my ID from yellow1 to yellow2...nice detective work !

as for the battery life, you guys should remember that TFT screens drink more juice than DSTN.

Don't know if you're referring to me, but since the models of the group buy don't come with the adapter/charger, I'm still trying to locate an alternative power supply that will fit in the proprietary AC connector of the 6622 and be properly spec'd to recharge the batteries safely.
