Demand for more Stylistic 1200s?

Greetings,

It turns out that the man we have been buying the Stylistics is local to me, actually about 5 miles from where I work. I met him today picking up a couple junk units (I broke my HD cable) and he said he had another shipment of about 1200 units due in soon. Is there much demand for another group buy? I would be willing to participate (I could save alot of shipping costs by driving there) at whatever level necessary if there is.

Squash:

Since you are local to him and have talked to him you should ask him to ask his source if they still have a box of I/O port doors somewhere. I tend to think, as someone else mentioned, that they task these were put to required a perminent connection to something and they just popped off the I/O doors to make it easier, So someone probably has a dusty box in the warehouse that has hundreds of I/O doors. It would sure be nice to find them.

I just thought of something else. You might want to check with him and see what he wants for defective units. For those of us with one or more it might be nice to pick up a parts machine if it is cheap enough. With as many as he is dealing in there must surely be some that don't work.

The purpose of my trip there was to get a couple defective units that I bought from him on Ebay. He seemed open to the idea of selling them, but probobly not one or two at a time. If we needed 10 or 15 of them we could probobly get them at a discount, as it standsI paid $33 each for the ones I picked up today.

I'll ask him about the covers and let you know, probobly won't happen until next week.

Also, the shop he works at appears to have a business out of buying PCs and PC hardware from companies... They had some really good deals on big Hitachi monitors ($250 for a 21 inch, the one Sun co-branded) and workstation-class PCs.

I might go for a few. Either fully working or defective (depending on what the defect is).

$33 would be a good price for them since just the replacement HD cable assemly is $28. Add in the pcmcia door and you are over $33. Maybe someone could arrange a group buy of 10 or so for parts and see if there are enough takers. Were the defective ones stripped or mainly whole. If this included a good battery or HD it would definately be a great deal but I doubt that they do.

The units I bought were pretty bare, they did not have drives, memory expansion, stylus, battery, or power cable. They both have the pcmcia door and the port replicator doors, but not the port cover. The case on one of them is damaged like it had been dropped on concrete, but the screens appear to be intact and there are no signs of problems with the electronics...

If they fire up with an AC adapter and the screen's OK, I'd probably grab a few for around $25. I can get memory/drives and even a battery but I may have a few non-mobile ideas for this thing so the battery (which can up the price right back up to a fully functional unit) isn't that important.

Interested in 2 or 3 of them, depends on price. I bought Stylistic-1000 (b/w) at halted.com a while ago, and just installed FreeBSD on it, was kind of hassle to get the install done on a PCMCIA card - if one is interested how-to:
http://the-labs.com/IAppliance/stylistic.html

I also found out gompgeeks.com has PCMCIA 10Mbit ethernet cards ideal for Stylistics for $9 each, but haven't looked about *BSD or Linux drivers, assuming there are.
