SOme info about my 1200

Hey guys I just wanted to drop a little info to the board on nhow I got my machine working.

First I bought a 2.5"-3.5" harddrive adapter off o ebay, then I loaded Win98 setup files onto the harddrive using my desktop cdrom.

Then I just put the HD back into the fujitsu and went through setupas normal.

All in all it took about 10 mins to get the files copied to it and then about 30 mins for the total setup.

The machine has 16megs on the motherboard and a 16meg dimm. he max memory is somewhere around 80megs.

The harddrive in the unit is a standard laptop harddrive, that is easily removed frform the fujitsu.

The screens are good quality and bright for a DSTN sceen.

The one thing that is kinda lacking is Handwriting recognition Software. To be honest I have not had much time to look for a quality product. I think there is some leads in the CF-01 board.

The soudchip is a ES1878 audio drivee. I am not sure if it is 16-bit or not.

I believe the PCMCIA handles cardbus.

Umm I do not thinnk kthere is much more to say. THe P120 is a solid chop that handles a fairly good load.

Anyone have something to add that I missed?

I'm in the process of copying Win98 files now (got the 1200 today - thanks Reldridg!), so I haven't gotten past that point yet, but one thing I do want to add is that I had a heck of a time getting the HD cover off. Not sure if this will be the case for every 1200 in the group buy, but the shock mounting strips on my unit were extremely sticky, making cover removal a little scary. There are only two screws holding the cover on, and at first I couldn't pry it up enough to peek inside and see what was holding it down, but after enough firm but gentle effort I did manage to peel it off. Getting the HD out also took some effort, since there is some shock mounting underneath as well, but after that everything was smooth sailing.

If anyone else encounteres resistance while pulling the HD, just keep at it - it will give eventually!

to pull the hd cover off just take yortime.

once the cover is off put a fine tipped phillips screw driver into one of the side mounts on the drive and pry it slowly and it will pop right out. this works well i think since the mounting hole is thicker metal and keeps you away from prying on the soft parts of the hd.

Same boat here - I was extremely nervous to pull too hard on that drive bay, but it did come out after a bit of work. I'm running 98 lite on the machine - it seems to be nice and quick. I'm working on installing the screen pivot software - we'll see if it works on the 1200 like it does on the CF01

Reldrig - kudos to you for organizing the buy and getting them shipped. I've only been around this board for a few weeks and got really lucky by being here when you started this whole thing.

thanks,
jim

for those in the SF bay area, the 2.5" > 3.5" adapter is available at Fry's for about $5 or $6. yeah, Fry's electronics. it's well worth it to go thru the customer supporless service at Fry's :)

Reldrig or others with opened stylistics,

What style of processor do these units use? I know of http://www.hitechcafe.com/eshop/dept.asp?dept_id=5 that plays in weird processors quite often. They have a p133 on sale now for $10.00. If the Stylistics support any further upgrades non MMX procs could go up to 200(?)mhz or if MMX is supported 300mhz or so(can't remember were pI's stopped mhz wise).

I know from webplayer experience that 50 extra mhz can make a big difference.

Just a quick note on opening this thing: The mainboard in this layered - it's two boards, one on top of the other. The CPU is on the bottom of the bottom board when you have it open. I didn't bother to look at it though, there's a large heatsink attached to it and too many things to unscrew and I wanted to fire this puppy up.

And the heatsink isn't what you traditionally think of in heatsinks, it's more like a laptop heatsink: a metal piece on the cpu attached to a metal bar routed to another metal piece next to a vent on the side of the unit.

I downloaded a front side bus utility and there are a couple issues that would need to be known before this type of utility can be used.

1) Does the 1200 use a PLL type oscillator
2) What part number is the PLL oscillator

The FSB utility I DL'd could interface with a variety of hardware, but after spending 15 min. randomly trying different settings I gave up. If there is a utility that can list these type of components on the motherboard, that may be useful for setting up the FSB utility.

From experience, you have to look closely at the board in the RAM area and find a chip that starts with ICS or WCS or something like that.
Did you download SoftFSB ?

Look like it have the Pentium 133 CPU in there. It say PP133 on the chip, the must scale it down to 120 to make the thing run cooler.

Can anyone tell me what video chipset this thing uses? I've just ordered 2 of them and I'd like to be prepared when they get here. I'll be installing linux on them both, so I need the actual chipset.

Bagger, it says here that they're running on a 60mhz bus
http://pencomputing.com/features/fujitsus.html
hence the speed 133/66=120/60
60mhz looks like a fairly "exotic" setting to me !
