USB Hack.......Done!!

Well, I sat up late tonight but I did it I have a USB port on my 1200. I am all wired for 2 but I can't find any room for the second. The only draw back is if I ever get a port replicator I can’t use the USB on the port replicator at all, only the internal one I created. To some this might be an issue but for me I will never buy a replicator. The port is on the top right of the unit just above the power, but on the top, kind of behind the pen holster. I will tell you this is not for the faint of heart nor the blind as the wires are soooo tiny I had to use a magnifying glass to solder the connections. I will get pix up in the next day or two.

Thanks Scybuch - I look forward to seeing pics.

I too have decided that I'm probably never going to need or want a port replicator, so I've been thinking of just taking the Ipex connector out and mounting the USB connectors there. Do you think that's do-able? Didn't really take a close look at it last time I had the case open. Another option would be to mount one where the video connector is, since I'm probably never going to connect this to an external monitor either. The only thing putting me off really tackling this so far is the assumption that, as you've confirmed, this will take fine soldering technique, which I'm sadly lacking. Will have to practice for it.

If you put it where the IPEX connector is you will have to remove all 120 pins from the motherboad, I think your 2nd idea is better, put it where the monitor goes. You will need another person to help you, they hold the magnifying glass while you solder, its kind of hard to do. Heres the link. Sorry about the pix, I should have taken more and I just now figured out how to set my camera to auto focus.

Nice. Didn't think of getting the power from somewhere else, that will save some eye strain and steadiness of hand. Where'd you get the USB connectors and at what price? Digikey?

No, I just happened to have an old motherboard laying around, it was bad anyway. I knew it was a good idea to hold on to that thing, my wife wanted me to get rid of it, you know taking up space.

I just had another thought about this - rather than disconnecting and soldering the incoming wires at the back end of the Ipex connector, would it be possible to cobble-up some sort of individual connector for each of the 4 (or 8) USB wires, to plug onto the appropriate pins on the front side? Or are the pins too close together to make that practical (don't have the unit in front of me to check)? If I recall correctly, there should be enough space to still conceal something like this behind the port doors and run wires internally. You don't need a connector that engages all the pins - just the ones that are needed.

Doh! Never mind - don't know what I was thinking, since the IPEX connector doesn't have pins on the front side (just checked the technical reference again). Still, I'll take another look at it when I get home and see if there's a way to do something on the front side that wouldn't require irrepairably altering the connector.

The pins are way, way too small, I can hardly see them without a maginfying glass. If you can make it work thats would be sweet!!

Oops trying not to double post, but it is more appropriate here.

Did the USB hack last night. Used a motherboard usb port (socket and cable).

Put it between keyboard connector and parallel port.

Used magnifying lens, tiny solder, tiny tip on soldering iron, a lot of hot glue to insulate the connections.
