my USB hack and case (modified 0 times) cybercypher Profile | Email hey, we put in a USB port on my stylistic last night, and we did it without ruining the ipex connector. basicly, we pulled out one set of usb pins, and solderd to them. if i need a port replicator, the connector still works, but one usb port wouldn't. however, since i'm never going to use a port replicator, we put the USB port itself where the gold battery terminals on the bottem-right were. this spot seems almost like it was made for a USB port, there are plastic walls in the right places and everything. we also made the port disconnectable, just in case i need to get into the case again, i can un plug it. (we used a usb-to-motherboard plug, the kind you can get anywhere for dirt cheap, not the kind the other hack used) i've gotten a webcam to work (though not very well) and a mouse. this project is not for the faint of heart! i have pictures, which i'm uploading right now. also, i found a harsh enviroment case at a hole-in-the-wall store (next door to one of fujitsu's buildings) for a stylistic 500, and it fits the 1200 perfectly, the screen lines up and everything. they had a few more, i think i'm going to go pick them up pictures of that will be up too. -Taylor Crashing Computers Since 1985 07-10-2001 11:18:10

RE:my USB hack and case (modified 0 times) cybercypher Profile | Email the case is a padded nylon type case, which the stylistic slips into. it does add to the heat problem, but when your out in the snow or (light) rain i think you'd be more worried about liquid then heat i don't use my case all the time, just when i need it. its also handy for transporting the unit in, because it protects the scrren, is padded, and has a handle. 07-15-2001 13:17:53

The only difference is that I stuck my usbport out the side right between the parallel port and keyboard socket. What can I say other than it does work. RE:my USB hack and case (modified 0 times) cybercypher Profile | Email good job, that makes 3 we considerd going in where you did with the usb port, but ultimately decided on the location we did because there was more room and support for the usb port. that being said, however, we ran into the problem of not being able to sit the 1200 up on a table with a usb device plugged in, which was a pain, but most of the time the 1200 is in my lap or on my arm, and i intend to mount it in my car sooner or later, so its not a problem in that usage. my delorme tripmate gps (refurb, $50 from delorme.com) is on its way, and when i get that its gonna be tinkering time i'm very impressed with the sound card and speed of these units, and i'm going to have a moving map/mp3 player soon enough 07-19-2001 09:18:56

I put the connector by the heatsink on the left side. Tight fit but it works. RE:my USB hack and case (modified 0 times) gern_blanston Profile I need to get a PS/2 mouse port on a 1200. How difficult would it be to modify the keyboard port to be a keyboard OR mouse port? Does anyone have a diagram of such a port (like the CF-01 has)? Would I have an easier time just attaching an external PS/2 jack to the port replicator jack? I appreciate the pictures that cybercypher put up, but they don't seem to show the exact method of attaching the USB port wires. Are you soldering directly to the port replicator jack? RE:my USB hack and case (modified 0 times) tcbordp Profile Here is a site with the pinout for a ps/2 mouse or keyboard. http://www.networktechinc.com/technote.html You will need a mouse/keyboard splitter like used on many laptops. They work by moving the one of the data lines to an unused pin, the clock, power and ground are shared by both mouse and keyboard. You have to figure out what pins go where on the splitter but that is easy. Also, on the 1200 there is a 3.3v line, be careful that it is not connected to something that is used in the splitter.
