hey, we put in a USB port on my stylistic last night, and we did it without ruining the ipex connector. basicly, we pulled out one set of usb pins, and solderd to them. if i need a port replicator, the connector still works, but one usb port wouldn't. however, since i'm never going to use a port replicator, we put the USB port itself where the gold battery terminals on the bottem-right were. this spot seems almost like it was made for a USB port, there are plastic walls in the right places and everything. we also made the port disconnectable, just in case i need to get into the case again, i can un plug it. (we used a usb-to-motherboard plug, the kind you can get anywhere for dirt cheap, not the kind the other hack used) i've gotten a webcam to work (though not very well) and a mouse. this project is not for the faint of heart!
i have pictures, which i'm uploading right now. also, i found a harsh enviroment case at a hole-in-the-wall store (next door to one of fujitsu's buildings) for a stylistic 500, and it fits the 1200 perfectly, the screen lines up and everything. they had a few more, i think i'm going to go pick them up pictures of that will be up too.

Great work !
About the case, is that the one you got:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1253662461
It seems to have a plastic protection for the screen, can you confirm ?
Is that whole in the wall nearby Fujitsu in Santa Clara, I'm nearby so I could stop by.

Thanks for the info. That's the Fry's nearby 880 I suppose.
Do you remember the name of the store ? I remember finding some peltiers in an old shop in the area, quite a few colorful shops over there...
If you prefer, you can email me at glimmers@stones.com.
Hope you haven't left for Oregon yet !

Thanks for the pics. It is kind of hard to tell for sure though...

Is it a slip-on nylon / padded cover type case, or a take your 'fuj' apart and replace the case type?

Something to be aware of when using these "Harsh Environment Cases" is that as well as sealing out the environment they can also seal in the heat thus exacerbating the heat problem many have experienced.

Good point about the heat. I'm willing to take the chance though since mine hasn't been too stubborn in that respect.
Just hope cybercypher tells me where that "hole in the wall" is located when he gets back.
Don't worry, I'm only going to get one !! I need it for a trip to Arizona at the end of next week.
BTW, can you tell us how much you paid for it ?

the case is a padded nylon type case, which the stylistic slips into. it does add to the heat problem, but when your out in the snow or (light) rain i think you'd be more worried about liquid then heat
i don't use my case all the time, just when i need it. its also handy for transporting the unit in, because it protects the scrren, is padded, and has a handle.

Just did the USB hack...kind of scary but do-able.

I'll have pictures tomorrow.

The only difference is that I stuck my usbport out the side right between the parallel port and keyboard socket.

What can I say other than it does work.

Pin 41 of the ipex connector is V+ (red)
pin 43 is green Data +
pin 45 is white Data -
pin 47 is black (usb ground)
I put the shielding next to the keyboard to chassis ground it.

good job, that makes 3
we considerd going in where you did with the usb port, but ultimately decided on the location we did because there was more room and support for the usb port. that being said, however, we ran into the problem of not being able to sit the 1200 up on a table with a usb device plugged in, which was a pain, but most of the time the 1200 is in my lap or on my arm, and i intend to mount it in my car sooner or later, so its not a problem in that usage. my delorme tripmate gps (refurb, $50 from delorme.com) is on its way, and when i get that its gonna be tinkering time
i'm very impressed with the sound card and speed of these units, and i'm going to have a moving map/mp3 player soon enough

I wanted to put it under the keyboard port, but I didn't see an easy way to get at that part without some major disassembly. Another good location is by the battery under the heatsink.

Did the hack yesterday. Works well. I left the pins and just soldered the usb cable on top of them. I put the connector by the heatsink on the left side. Tight fit but it works.
I too wanted to try the spot under the ps2 port but didn't want to jeapordize my newish toy by fully taking it apart.

Halted Specialties (Santa Clara) has a black canvas Fujitsu carrying case for the Stylistic 1000 RF, with the Fujitsu logo, for $12.50. Not sure if it will hold the Stylistic 1200, though.

Hacking the 1000 won't work. The 1200 has a Pentium and the USB controller is onboard. The 1000 has no such capability. IIRC, the docking station for the 1000 doesn't have USB ports either.

I need to get a PS/2 mouse port on a 1200. How difficult would it be to modify the keyboard port to be a keyboard OR mouse port? Does anyone have a diagram of such a port (like the CF-01 has)?

Would I have an easier time just attaching an external PS/2 jack to the port replicator jack?

I appreciate the pictures that cybercypher put up, but they don't seem to show the exact method of attaching the USB port wires. Are you soldering directly to the port replicator jack? I'd like to avoid doing that if at all possible.

Thanks for any help.

Here is a site with the pinout for a ps/2 mouse or keyboard.

http://www.networktechinc.com/technote.html

You will need a mouse/keyboard splitter like used on many laptops. They work by moving the one of the data lines to an unused pin, the clock, power and ground are shared by both mouse and keyboard. You have to figure out what pins go where on the splitter but that is easy. Also, on the 1200 there is a 3.3v line, be careful that it is not connected to something that is used in the splitter.
