It may be a little unclear "SD/MMC" doesn't mean the JB will work with either SD or MMC. It refers to flash cards that are SD and MMC compatible, can't find it now but it has been stated before - the JB only "speaks" MMC. Kingston makes no mention of this device being MMC compatible.

Look for a card that is SD/MMC or MMC only to test the mod.

FWIW the only card I've tried that was not part of an MP3 kit is a generic 256 MB SD/MMC Plus - this worked with the JB but couldn't get it to be recognized by the PC unless it was already inserted into the programmer before attaching it to USB.

yeah it sure seems like these arent even sd/mmc but either or.. the sd/512 as opposed to the mmc/512 model. kingston doesnt seem to have one for both.
disreguard the dual voltage post , i think that was another model.

I'm confused. I thought part of the SD spec was that ALL SD cards were supposed to be MMC compatible, and support SPI mode. I've also seen conflicting info on the 2Gbyte limit; some sites have claimed that's a sign problem in the driver, rather than an actual limitation of the cards. (Although in the case of the JB, I guess it doesn't matter since we're living with the drivers that are already there anyway.) Is there definitive info somewhere?

all i have are these Kingtson SD 512mb cards.

Going from memory, Kingston cards are the most reported to not work with the JB

I thought part of the SD spec was that ALL SD cards were supposed to be MMC compatible, and support SPI mode.

Since the only info ever publically released (and appearently pulled) about the SD card spec was a terse white paper, take anything you've heard with a grain of salt.

Is there definitive info somewhere?

Check on the http://OESF.org/forums , which is as close to 'definative' as you can get without signing an NDA. The Sharp Zaurus is not compatable with 2GB+ cards using the normal drivers, however, a closed source driver has allowed newer 2GB+ cards to work with the Zaurus. There was also talk of a GPL SD card driver with 2GB+ support being developed by commision of makers of the TomTom GPS. Appearently, there is a SD card driver in some of the newer Linux kernels, but only supports 1GB and below.

There's a "simplified physical layer specification" downloadable from www.sdcard.org http://www.sdcard.org/confirm/confirm_memorycard.aspx that certainly implies that SPI mode is always present. However, it mentions a particular mechanism for getting an SD card into SPI mode that may not be supported by various drivers, and perhaps some cards are more or less particular about requiring that sequence before they can talk SPI. Likewise, it mentions a couple different schemes for handling cards larger than 2G. I suppose that playing with drivers and assorted large SD cards to figure out which ones behave how WRT SPI mode gets to be an expensive and annoyingly time consuming proposition.

I didn't think SPI mode was the same as MMC mode. SPI is a physical layer specification, both SD and MMC support SPI but they may use different commands to read/write the chip.

The MMC summary docs can be downloaded from the MCCA web site.
