SD/MMC Cartridge Hack Question

New MessageSD/MMC Cartridge Hack Question (modified 0 times) DavidM348

I finally finished my SD/MMC modified cartridge using a 64 MB xD card. I checked the cartridge (no SD card installed) using the Juicebox diagnostic screen (<< + >). The memory test checks out the NAND memory just fine using the cartridge test (4 times showing 64 M byte, checksome same on all 4). From this I ASSUME the cartridge is functioning normally.

My question is this - when I insert an SD card in the modified cartridge and turn on the Juicebox, all I get is a blank screen. I cannot even get the diagnostic screen to come up. I've just gotten JTAG/OpenOCD working so I haven't really had a chance to see if that tells me anything. Is this normal behavior for the modified SD/MMC cartridge or did I screw up my soldering??

Thanks!

Yes, this is normal because you have changed the gpio lines that are normally connect to the sd card so the juice box rom no longer sees the sd card. From here on out you can only access the sd card using homebrew software like fatjbox. You can write to the nand portion using the nandwrite software.

My JuiceBox stuff is packed up (moving) so can't verify but I think diagnostics will work no matter what.
As unix_guy points out the JB will no longer see the SD card. That means the SD card should not change what happens when the JB boots.

If the NAND is recognized then that part is wired correctly - you should double check the etch cuts and SD wiring.

Cool, thanks for the replies.

So with the hacked cartridge with an SD card installed, the JB should just boot into its default demo videos, ignoring the SD card? Since my JB actually halts with a blank screen, I guess I may have a problem.

The only etch cut I'm concerned about is the long one next to the resistor (R2 to ground), so I will verify that it is indeed cut all the way. Also, when I soldered across the two resistors R2 and R3, I accidently desoldered R3. I thought I soldered it back in place, but I will recheck that as well.

Thanks again for the help!

* sigh *

Yep, technician error again. Apparently, when I soldered across R2-R3, I accidebtly desoldered R3 from the PCB. A quick drop of solder fixed that and now the JB will boot with or without an SD card in the hacked SD/MMC cartridge.
