Here are a few "Truths" to get this thread going:
- You can play MP3s with the adapter you recieve in the "MP3 Starter Kit"
...- MP3 Files only (no WMAs)
...- MP3 must be less than 128kbps
...- MP3 files can be published using JB software or a simple "Drag & Drop"
- You can view images
...- Images are dithered and the extensions are changed to JBP (JuiceBoxPhoto?)
...- Images must be published to card using JB software or community software, not "Drag & Drop"
- It will accept UP TO 512mb SD cards (stated on the box/website)
- Playing Video Files from the SD card is still a pipe dream
...- Many claim it's true - there is no solid evidence / HowTo
- Upgrading the OS/Firmware appears possible, but no "value add" has been posted (yet)

I should clarify a few things:
- The "MP3 Starter Kit" Provides the following
...- 32mb SD card
...- Software CD
...- USB SD Card Reader
...- USB Extension Cable (dont we all need one of these)
...- Juicebox Adapter for SD card
- With the "MP3 Starter Kit" You get the ability to
...- Listen to MP3s (44khz, 128kbps(or lower)) on the SD Card
...- View Pictures stored on SD card (I was able to view JPG and GIF, but did not try to publish other formats)
...- Upgrade the SD card UP TO 512mb so you can access more MP3s and Images (and perhaps video in the future)

- There are several distinct revisions to the firmware/hardware
...- To find out which one you have, hold REWIND(<<) and PLAY(>) on startup
...- For most(?) units with red LED lights on the left side above the buttons, MP3 must be less than 128kbps

- For those software revisions that will play other than 128kbps
...- <128kbps files will play fast
...- >128kbps files can be Variable or Fixed Bit Rate

- Software Revisions
...- Ver 2.2 can play >128Kbps MP3s (and <, but not so well)
...- Ver 2.6 Can not play over 128kbps MP3s

- Hardware Revisions
...- Those with NO red LED above the buttons (looks like a small hole), this seems to be the older rev
...- Those WITH red LED are so far, all Prod. Ver. 2.6
...- May have other differences inside as well, but nobody seems to have done a comparison yet

I, as well as others have played MP3s off a 1GB SD card, so 512MB is not set in stone.

>- Playing Video Files from the SD card is still a pipe dream

Yep, the built-in video software can't play off SD card, and no one has yet ported a media player to the open-source image.

>...- May have other differences inside as well, but nobody seems to have done a comparison yet

Pretty much what you said is all that's 100% consistant, so far at least. MOST 8MB players have a TSOP ROM (easy to remove and replace with a new EEPROM), however I have a blue 8MB that has an epoxy glob instead. All 2MB so far have had chip globs for RAM. MOST all units have an epoxy glob for a processor, however at least one reported has a standard chip package. ROM checksums are all over the place, even of units of the same color, RAM size, and versions, /sometimes/ have different checksums, so there may be small differences in ROMs, even beyond the noted versions in the config utilities.

In the spirit of "The Truth" I should admit that I have also stuck a 1GB card in my JB and been able to play MP3 files from it, but I CAN NOT confirm that the JB addresses the full 1GB, or only the first 512mb of the card. When I get a few minutes I will dump a lot of MP3's on the card and let everyone know my findings, however I expect it fails to address over 512mb

Tom61 - can you verify that the 1GB card is fully addressed, or did you not load the card up completely? Perhaps this needs to be it's own thread until we know "The Truth"

The SD card that came with the MP3 kit says it is Fat12, 512 bytes per sector.

If that helps...

Or am I stating the obvious...

I have a 1G sd card. Using windows explorer I formated it as FAT using the default cluster size. Windows explorer would only allow me to put about 640 MB on the card, but I am seeing all those files (more than just 512).

Some boxes without the LED above the buttons (the older hardware version, with 8MB RAM) come with software version 2.6 instead of 2.2, thus aren't able to play MP3s above 128kbps. I have one.
