JuiceBox as a USB peripheral
Connecting the JuiceBox serial line to a USB2Serial converter

I was looking closer at the FTDI's chips & modules.

http://www.ftdichip.com/Documents/DataSheets/Modules/DS_MM232R_v091.pdf

This could be a solution for a serial interface to the JuiceBox, and it is small
enough ... it could (maybe) fit into the unit. Or small enogh it could fit into
a small incloseure and we could pass the serial lines out through a 3.55mm stereo
audio connector from the JuiceBox. FTDI also has a solution for JTAG over USB ...

Thanks

there is also another chip maker that is making a USB2UART solution
CP2101 USB to UART IC

Here is another example using this chip instead of the FTDI's

I am leening toward something more like this then installing a circut inside the JuiceBox.
Two resons for this are;
  • We can use the same setup for other projects like the cuecat idea
  • We can use the host USB to power the unit.

Ok, to start we need to bring the UART TX & RX lines and power (gnd, vcc) out of the JuiceBox. I think using a chassis mount 4 conductor 3.5 mini audio jack will work. These connectors have 4 conductors instead of the normal 3 conductor (stereo) connectors. They are used where the stereo lines (LT, RT, GND) and the mic lines (MIC, GND) are passed thru the same connector. Neat! we can use them here!
4 conductor 3.5 mini audio jack
4 conductor 3.5 mini audio plug
I found them online for <$3 Here for the Jack and Here for the Plug

    Thanks
