Tell us what you got in yours.

1. Perform a self test by holding down the REW and Play button on startup w/ or without a cartridge. Check out the memory test.

2. Also, tell us the numbers off the back.

other:
inside this box has SMD mounted chips for ARM7&ROM. It also has the pads in place for a
reset switch.

mem test also has a 'Cartridge Test'
Cartridge Test
Manufacturer: ID = C1
Memory Size ID = C1

.. no idea what this is, no cartridge is inserted so it must be the ROM.

can we get a consensus on which units will play mp3s encoded >128kbps?

Well both my blue& grey and my lime green play mp3's encoded >128k. i've been using 4 that i made as a test bench. they range from 320kbps(VBR), 256kbps(CBR), 128kbs(CBR), and 296kbs(VBR). They all seem to play fine on both.

blue:
mp3 version: 1.0.2
firmware :2.0.8
build: 050806215450

green:
mp3 version: 0.1.1
firmware :A.B.C
build:04073103150

hope that helps.

I just picked one at Target/clearance. They had mostly boxes with LEDs, but I got the only one without a LED.

Color: lime green
LED: no
Production Test Ver 2.6
Mem test:
ROM size detected 8MB
ROM checksum 26584d02
SDARM: first 2MB passed
RAM size detected: 8MB
Addr range C000000-C7FFFFF
Allocated address: C1F7914
Tested range: C1F7914-C7FF9FF
PASS

Edit: rear numbers:
H2576
2454EA

So basically it's a mixed box, with 8MB RAM but software version 2.6. It also doesn't play MP3s over 128kb/s.

Damn can't edit the message above anymore. The green box I posted about in the previous message also has:
MP3 version 1.0.5
Firmware revision: 2.0.8
Build: 040812232933
It has inside DIL chips for both ROM (OKI) and RAM (8M), so my next project is to unsolder the ROM, dump its contents, and replace it with something else. :)

One of a set of six from overstock.com. The other red one has the same Model number,
but is currently in pieces. There were two blue and two grey as well. The cartridges
included with these units are all dummies - plastic housings with no circuit boards at
all. (That makes them hard to modify into xD cards )

The unit I have running does NOT play MP3s > 128kbps (and has a nice warning that says
"sample exceeds 128kbps"), but it does seem to handle mp3s with less than 80kbps correctly.

CPU and ROM are COB on the one I took apart.

Same JuiceBox specs here, divxdude. (including color, except mine says 3414EA) Got it at KBToys Nov. 2005.
Sleep test will not "wake up" on mine either.
