Apps for JuiceBox
Better, or Different?

I'm a juicebox owner who just re-visited this site by a recent digg.com link. (You've been warned.)

I understand the goals of getting better and open audio, graphic and video formats, but are their other applications you're looking for on this platform?

Frankly, I was disappointed when getting mine to find the strict image format. I was hoping to drop my camera's jpg loaded SD card in and start browsing and deleting. It would be fun to be able to hook it up to my box and control the display from a PC, moving beyind the standard text lines boards used for status and other things.

With the feeble controls, is anyone anticipating a game emulator?

Is the serial port effort in hopes of a device controller?

I can't speak for everyone but there appear to be two camps; 1) People who want to use an unmodified Juicebox as a picture/video viewer without the built-in limitations. 2) People who want to use it as a development platform for their own portable Linux/ARM/LCD/Audio project.
Guess I'm mostly in the first group but have added JTAG and serial to be able to play around with what others come up with. I'm also obsessed with hardware hacking and have made a few modified cartridges. (Planing to add an xD socket to JB adapter how-to to the wiki one of these days

That is a cool idea!

Well MAME has been ported to a digital camera so anything is possible.

That's another use I hadn't thought of. Originally the serial port was hooked up to see what is printed during boot. It has been successfully used to dump the contents (nand_1.c) of a Juiceware cartridge.

As far as I know prpplague is the only one who has successfully booted a custom cartridge on the Juicebox. This is the final step to being able to run arbitrary applications on the platform (other than actually writing the applications.
