Hi guys,

I wondered if anyone had found a cheap source of MMC/SD card holders to use for the MP3 player adaptor modification found in this thread?

The best I've found is this for 7.22.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Ben

You can get mini-SD sockets on eBay, 3 for 99 cents - item #7526772206. I don't know if the pinout is the same as a full-size SD socket.

I found one for 3.95 + shipping here.

It's the best I can find - the micro sd ones on ebay are tempting though.

I just bought some directly from Mattel. It was a pain to find on the site. I think I searched directly for the Juicebox by the part number or something. But the part number for the adpater ($5.48) is H4448-9019.

these two are excellent choices as their cases can also be used with a little trimming:

Has anyone used one of those before? They don't appear to have any solder pads. This one: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=204 seems ideal. But it's a bit more expensive.

yes i've used all three, you have to depopulate the USB interfaces but otherwise its very easy to solder to the pads. yes the sparkfun board is a good break out board. if you have concerns about soldering, thats the way to go.

Because I'm a little confused about your message.

I'm new to this site. This is a great source of information. I also do PCB layout and was planning on doing the SD adapter board. As far as the SD connector, I use Digikey for a lot of stuff ( but a $25 minimum there) but they stock several versions of SD sockets i.e.

http://www.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail?Ref=232456&Row=435406&Site=US

there are others..
Keep up the good work..

I found a good cheap source for sd/mmc USB readers than can most likely be disassembled. The source is in china and they come in at a whopping 2.25 each + 1.25 shipping(for one at least). I've bought a lot of stuff from these guys, they're legit. It takes about two weeks for it to get to the states from Hong Kong.

I've been eyeing these http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=136# 3.95 + shipping and no disassembly.

Would these work out?

I just tried to use a generic MMC/SD card holders for the MP3 player adapter modification. It did not work. I followed according to diagrams and I did not even notice the card was inserted. I think we will need a kit from Mattel.
If you go to www.juicebox.com and under GUIDED SEARCH and type in #H4448 it will give you a parts list. Scroll down to #H4448 and click on it. You will see 2 items listed, MP3 & 32SD card.

Ben,
If you notice in the link you listed. He uses a flash card adapter from Mattel. I don't know if it will work but at least we will have the software it comes with that is needed to convert both MP3 and JPEG.

Mills, did you have at least one .MP3 or .JBP file on the card? The Juicebox will fall thru to the demo, exactly as if no card was inserted, otherwise.

mills, could you give us some details about what you tried, as i've add the sd/mmc card interface to over 50 units and not once had a problem.

there is no software needed to convert the MP3's. the juicebox plays standard MP3's that are less than 128k rate. as for the jpeg conversion software you can download the official version of the software, in addition there are numerous other open source versions available.

You're right Jason & prpplague,(I'm such an idiot) the format was wma. It works just fine, sorry for the confusion. Well Ben, it looks like all you need is a generic card adapter.

I will post pics soon.
Thanks to all,
Mills

Understand, I've had my JuiceBoxes for a grand total of an hour now, but I have some "standard" 64kbps joint-stereo files that the box will not recognize, telling me they aren't 48kbps (well, that's true, but still). I threw a 96kbps joint-stereo file at it, though, and it played fine. As usual, I'm confused.

Pointers, please, particularly to the official version of the software (for newbies like me, http://www.juicebox.com/ redirects to http://service.mattel.com/us/ )? I didn't realize there was YAPF (yet-another-propriatary-format) required; clearly, the JPG files I stuck on the card failed to display... ;)

Hey gang,

Just got my 6x Juiceboxes from Overstock last week. Interestingly, the carts they come with are just dummies - no ROMs at all. I suppose that means I'll have to hack directly on the main board instead of going through the cartridge slot. No biggie...

Anyway, what to do about SD/MMC? I found brand-new SD/MMC sockets at Mouser for $1.70ea. No minimum order:

http://www.mouser.com/search/refine.aspx?Ntt=688-scda1a1301

They've got a variety of these in different standoff heights, but the prices are all about the same.

Also, someone said that you can't buy xD sockets without being a member of the consortium. That may be true, but Mouser sells a combination SD/MMC + xD socket for $7.70ea to anyone - I've got one right in front of me. Look here:

http://www.mouser.com/search/refine.aspx?Ntt=688-SCDE1C0102

It's got two separate sets of contacts in it, one for each type of memory card. Because they're both accessed from the same socket you'll need a separate SD/MMC socket to build the full internal override system, but this will get you there without soldering directly to the xD card or tearing apart an adapter.

Now to fire up that soldering iron...

Eric

i've never used the juicebox to "as-is" to display pictures so the best i can do is point you to the thread on this board discussing the format:

http://www.linux-hacker.net/cgi-bin/UltraBoard/UltraBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=MJB&Post=13&Idle=0&Sort=0&Order=Descend&Page=0&Session=

at the bottom there is a link to a winblows app:

i generally prefer to get usb card readers similiar to what i've posted in the past. these provide a nice solid base to solder to, plus with just a little modification you can use the plastic case as well.

Seems to vary by individual player, just like the ability to play greater than 128Kbps files. On the one I tried a lower bitrate file on, it played, but at 128Kbps speed, so a 64Kbps file would play twice as fast as it should.

Understand, I've had my JuiceBoxes for a grand total of an hour now, but I have some "standard" 64kbps joint-stereo files that the box will not recognize, telling me they aren't 48kbps (well, that's true, but still). The software that comes with the MP3 kit converts any MP3 not 128Kbps to 128Kbps. 128Kbps is the only speed pretty much garanteed to work on all JBs. If you want to play those files without conversion, try the other 5 JBs you have, as the ability to play non-128Kbps MP3s is that random. See the old/grand/huge thread for info about this.

I haven't gotten my mod working yet, but I got my SD slots free from Molex's sampling program. I'm not sure if you can get them if you're not a student or engineer, but it's worth trying. They're really good, btw... I also ordered some USB sockets that were out of stock, so they sent the SD slots ahead, and then when the USB sockets came in, they sent them with an employee who was on a business trip to my area - and he dropped them off on the same day the SD slots came in the mail!

hope this helps
