Finally got my mp3 kit, thank for the deal (you know who!)

From what I can tell, my unit (with the red led) can't play anything greater then 128kbps (has to be stereo and 44.Hz too)

someone with a unit w/o a red led can you clarify for us?

You want a blue or lime green 8MB (the ones without LED), as it seems those two models have the older MP3 player version that is not limited. There are some issues with MP3 playback on those units, anything under 128K will be played fast, and certain 128K MP3s have troubles playing (which don't on the newer version of the player).

My Red 8MB (no LED) and Blue 2MB (w/LED) have the same MP3 player version and can't play < or > 128K.

This is weird Tom, but the software app that came with my MP3 kit doesn't seem to detect the card. I already inserted the card in the JuiceBox, and turned it on...but nothing seemed to happen since the screen played the demo just as if there was no card in the slot. I follwed the instructions and installed the software.

Afterwards, I inserted the card in the reader, placed it in my usb port, and started up the software. it says No card connected and wont let me add images or mp3s. Is there any way to add mp3s without using the software?

For what it's worth both the green/green ones I checked were without power LEDs and with v2.6, though from all the reports I've read so far most of the blue/silver without LEDs have been v2.2 so even if not that clear cut, it's probably you're best bet.

GWIZAH:
i had the same problem with my first MP3 kit. It refused to work until i had used the commandline format to format the card strangely...

i.e. format card's_drive_letter /FS:FAT /A:1024

i have no idea why that fixed the card. but afterwards the software would find it.

p.s. always be careful when using format. :)

Are you using the card that came with the mp3 kit? I found that some generic SD cards do not work with the SPI(?) interface that the juicebox uses. That's why the card works with the reader and not the juicebox.
If you set the volume id (offsets 27-2A) to 0x77 77 77 77, the reader software should recognize the card. Probably won't help it work with the juicebox though. :p

well, oddly enough even without the dumb Juicbox software, I can drag and drop any 128k encoded mp3 onto the card, and play it in the JB. Images are still wonky though, since I haven't figured out how to convert an image to the Juicebox's display settings. So far I tried an 8-bit .bmp converted to 256 colors and renamed .jbp

it displays, although it looks completely destroyed.

So if I want one that can play any bitrate mp3, I'm looking for a blue or lime-green Juicebox without the LED? Is there any other combination that is known to be good, and/or combinations that are known NOT to be good?

I have a Blue/Silver v2.6 w/o LED. It doesnt play the >128 mp3s.

So what seems to be the determining factor on the ability to play >128kbps MP3s? Is it Version 2.2 and below? What relationship does the case color have to do with it? I have a no-LED Red/Silver unit with V2.2. I'm still waiting for my MP3 kit to arrive, so I can't test it. Has anyone had luck with the Red colored units and >128k MP3s?

Color doesn't seem to matter. Version does matter, and 2.2 can play >128Kbps (and <, but not so well).

My red 8MB unit can't play anything except 128K, but it is a version 2.6 model.
