Greetings-

I'm a new poster, obviously. I've read thru the posts on this board, saw a couple threads I liked and ideas I haven't thought of.

I just received my Compaq MSN Companion yesterday. I haven't even booted it up but already cracked the case. Looks nice in there, but that is one big passive heatsink :) Thinking of maching a slot for a small fan in there....

Anyways, my goal is to Display pictures and MAYBE read email, as well as use VNC to control an MP3 player. I have another unit I was going to place downstairs to play MP3s- a 1.05 Ghz Duron system I tossed together for 200$. It should suffice.

I'm intent on taking the screen out and making it into a hangable display with a wood frame, glass overlay, etc. So I'm going to rework the cables.

I'd ideally like to boot into a real windows, or some form of linux- I have 8, 128, and 256 mb compact flash cards available, with the intent of getting a few 64s. I can get a USB Compact flash reader easily enough, as well as a scsi. I thought about just making a converter to run it onto the HD directly into the mb (switch some pins)... should work.

So what steps should I take to realize my dream? :)

Win98SE? Linux?

and... anyone figure out what chip should have gone there for the NIC? :P

Thanks,

Jason

jailbait linux fits onto a 16 megabyte CF card, or the internal 16 megabyte SanDisk.
win98se fits onto a 256 megabyte CF card, but a 340 megabyte or 1 gigabyte MicroDisk is better.
win98se command line DOS fits onto a 16 megabyte CF card quite easily, if you're a DOS kinda person
