sound?

Hi. I've been looking at getting an IA to be used for a mp3 player for my room. I'm thinking if I get Jailbait on it I can NFS mount a folder with MP3s and XMMS and play it like that. Has anyone gotten sound working for Jailbait? ANother thing I was wondering: the keyboard is IR, so does anyone know if you can use a IR remote with it? I know you can control XMMS through IR remotes, and that would make this thing the perfect little MP3 player. If you can't do this in Jailbait (I'm a Linux person myself) can sound and/or IR work in Windows?

sound works fine, under Win98SE -- Jailbait Linux doesn't have the sound drivers integrated, as it's configured. the VIA82Cxxx chipset is best supported by the ALSA drivers, as noted at Peter Zinck Nielsen's web page for Linux on his Compaq notebook.

for just an MP3 player, Win98 is a lot of overhead, requiring at least a 256 megabyte CF card, or a 340 megabyte MicroDrive. on the other hand, building the drivers for the Jailbait kernel (2.4.0-test1) is a bit more trouble, but less overhead, in the long run... if someone ever documents how to mount the Jailbait image via a loopback device, it would be a whole lot easier

(shameless request for help follows...)
since you're a Linux person, maybe you can help?

The reason I want one is to use as an mp3 player and I'm not going to buy one if I'm not sure if sound will work in Linux (sorry). If you'd like to donate one though I'd be more than happy to look into it immediately :). Has anyone tried ALSA on this thing? Sounds like it could work if someone would just take the time to look into it. Unfortunately I don't have a $100 to spend on things that might work :).

well -- bball is the better Linux resource, and likes his quiet, so he hasn't worked at this. i'd like my JailBait X terminal to provide sound, so i'm trying to setup an older system with the 2.4.0-test1 Linux kernel, but need to obtain details for mounting the current JailBait image as a filesystem, to enable copying/updating select files (like the kaweth.o and pegasus.o network modules ) as well as the sound drivers.

i've only got a single IA-1, so can't send it to you, sorry

Use an USB audio adapter. Works great, sounds better. I have one from Xitel. It's supported by kernel 2.4, and costs $40.

I haven't explicitly used it in an IA1 (haven't set mine up yet) but I've used it on other linux boxen.

It's a VERY satisfactory solution.

I can't speak for Linux, but the built-in sound works under NetBSD. I have had some weird skipping, but I think that's a temporary driver bug.
