Using the STOCK AI1 as a broadband terminal?

From reading the other messages, I'm not sure if this is possible. I want to determine if I can use an unmodified unit (with a USB 10/100 adapter) as a broadband terminal. Is there a way to get an MSN id to get past the initial log-in stuff? I assume I need to get it to log in at least once so I can get to a point where it would let me use the 10/100 adapter.

You need to have MSN Companion 2.0 in order to use your USB-ethernet adapter. The easiest way to get it is to sign up for the "6 monthes free" account then let your machine automatically update to 2.0 overnight.

Okay, I did this. Will it be obvious tomorrow with the new software how I can specify a LAN connection?

From the crappy looking browser setup you get by default, I'm thinking I may have to go ahead and put jailbait and an X-server on there afterall.

Also, how long should I wait before cancelling? You think they get that a lot?

Oops - did I say that out loud?

Signing up for MSN Companion "6 monthes free" is only necessary if you want to use the MSN Companion browser. I think the v2.0 browser might be a little better based on the screen shots at http://www.msncompanion.com My personal situation is, after signing up for the 6 monthes free deal, I decided to try to rush the update using the Control-U bootup procedure described on this BBS. During the update, I lost my phone connection, and now my IA-1 boots to a black screen that says "Call techical support". (Tech support says they will get back to me in 24 to 96 hours.) I decided to go the "add a hard drive" route pioneered by Supermer. I've got my adapter on order and will install Win98 on a spare 2Gb notebook drive over the holidays. I plan to pull the plug on MSN Companion immediately after that.

I got the upgrade last night, plugged in a Linksys 10/100 USB adapter, and restarted, and it lets me use my broadband connection as promised. However, for some reason, I was assuming it would no longer require an msn login (silly me), so I'm still stuck paying MS after 6 months for the priveledge of using this box to access the net I can already access.

I wonder if it would be possible to put a stock WinCE install on here, with browser and Windows Media support.
