Should this not be easier than this?
DL a new OS through the Bios

Since the upgrade path is accessible and changeable in the bios, would it not be easier to create the Os you want to use in the bin files then name them the same as what the machine expects. Place them on a web server somewhere and put in that address for it to go download it and it would install it itself. Im not real up on this type of thing. But if you new how do this it would seem alot easier than buying a $300 microdrive to try and make a slow $99 PC when you can build a 1.7 GHZ machine for $450 right now. I bet one of you guys here are on the level and can do it. and it would save about 500 other people the pain of trying to buy flash and flash readers and to tear into it.

Just my thoughts,

1) The appeal of this machine is the $99 LCD monitor that happens to include a PC. It's nice to have an X-term / surf machine when I'm playing games on my main machine that don't allow me to alt-tab. (EverQuest, Dark Age of Camelot, etc), and this means more room on my desk.

2) Upgrading the internal flash over the web would be great, but I believe it's a lot more complicated than changing the URL. My guess (since I don't have my IA-1 yet) is that the upgrade just patches a few files. Installing a new OS (such as Jailbait Linux) would require completely rewriting the whole flash.

I fear that many people have forgotten the whole point of all this... We did it to prove that we could do it... Also, everyone here knew that doing these changes were for the technically inclined... If you're uncomfortable typing commands at the keyboard, this obviously isn't for you... From what I see thus far, I seriously doubt there is going to a point-and-drool upgrade for ANY of the machines listed on this website.

the $450 1.7 GHz home-built system takes up a lot more physical space, has a wired keyboard and mouse, and just does not have the visual appeal of a small LCD device. the CF card reader/adapter and 32 meg CF cards aren't terribly expensive, and if you've already hacked an Audrey system, you probably already have them available. hacking involves all of these things: some hardware, some software, some ingenuity, and the overwhelming desire to do something the original equipment manufacturer never intended. when you get an $89 Audrey or a $99 IA-1 that can be used as an X-terminal or VNC monitor, you get quite a bargain, IMHO
