Advice for IA-1 and Windows 98
Windows 98 on the IA-1

1) First I want to thank you folks for this awsome bbs!
2) I won a $80 ebay auction for a IA-1 companion, and would like some opinions:

This is going to be an xmas present for my mom, she likes the idea of having internet access in the kitchen. Problem is, using it out of the box requires me to pay the Borg $9.95/mo. for "companion" service - even though we allready have dsl. Just by reading around you guys' posts.. i can either go the linux route or use a "lite" win98. I'm thinking that since this is for my mom, the win98 approach would be better since with that, she could use a late version of IE that she is allready familiar with, and it would be really nice to use an 802.11b usb nic (something that the ce companion2 doesn't support in it's native os) And to top it all of, the comp would be able to print on our xerox laser printer - since agian it's not limited to the printers MSN supports. I've also heard that the screen looks great with the proper drivers for the onboard graphics card..

So my question is... *cough*..
How well does the LCD IA-1 based companion run win98? Well, in terms of ability to use Internet Explorer and browse the web?

Also.. Does win98 really fit on the internal sandisk? What additional storage is necessary for me to do win98 on one of these?

Again, you guys are awsome, love the forum!

Kevin

JJ,
Yes, using the win98 approach, you can do with the IAone, just about anything you could with a regular desktop computer. However, it will be slower. If you were going to use it for yourself, and you were used to an Athlon 1.4GHz, you would probably be frustrated. But since it is for your mom, she might not care as much.
As for the screen, it does look very nice at 800x600. I have been running win98 on a 340meg microdrive and did not have any problems with the unit except that one day when the screen burned out - but compaq sent me a refurb and I sent that one back in. No problems at all with running the microdrive, and the usb ports seem to provide enough power to run just about anything (I have tested keyboards, mice, hard drive, web cam among other stuff).

Again, it runs it very well but just slow. Win98 won't fit on the internal sandisk, but jailbait will and of course, just plain DOS. You could get by with a 256meg CF or even a 128meg, but might as well just pay the $100 or so they are now and get the 340meg microdrive. That way you can have windows 98 (regular version and NOT just "lite") installed, with ms office (just powerpoint, excel, word - and no extra crap) and a 50 meg swap file, with lots of space left.

Now, since you have DSL, browsing will appear MUCH faster than over my stinky 56k modem. That will probably make a big difference on how fast it seems.

Thanks for the insight ranman!!

Two quick questions

1) Would win98 "burn" out a large CF card?
2) If I did keep the MSN img on the ia-1, it's my understanding that as of today, there is no way to disable/hack it from logging using the msn service, even if you have another isp and want to use the net?

If that can't be done, really the win98 approach would still be cooler, because i could load msn explorer, and use a wireless usb nic with my airport - something you can't do with the ce/msn os as it doesn't support it. But do you think I would have enough space on a 340MB microdrive for win98, wireless drivers, and msn explorer?

You said you have win98, office on yours, how much do you have free?

Thanks again!!
