Any update on eMachines - boot from LAN?
Any update on eMachines - boot from LAN?

I have USB hard drive and tried to get the eMachines unit to boot from it with no luck. I noticed a 'Boot from LAN' option in the bios - has anyone had luck with that?

Seriously - has anyone REALLY gotten this thing to boot to anything other than MSN? The 'information rich' website says the sandisk image has been updated but I see nothing explaining the process. Can we open a new section for the eMachines unit?

Yes, I have gotten it to boot from a USB FDD (it is very, very slow...)

However, I asked the same question about 2 weeks ago -- if anyone has gotten it to boot from a USB HDD (Hard Disk Drive)?

I have seen in these threads that others have gotten a USB ZIP to boot, but no mention of a USB HDD.

What have you tried?

Regards,

I tried to do it using my usb hd case from compgeeks but the drive did not power up. Also, the monitor didn't show anything, which makes me think it doesn't provide enough power to the drive. I will have to try getting power from a USB hub first as I don't have a power adapter for the USB hd case.

Has anyone gotten any farther on this? The bogus 'information rich' web site is now dead. Someone said a littel solder and it boots to CE? Seriously, maybe its time to divide this into separate Compaq and eMachines boards.

Yes, I did get it to boot off a USB Floppy to DOS. But as you said, someone else claims to have booted a USB ZIP, but I don't have one to try so I can confirm it.

I fully agree that I'd like to see this thread broken into at least 3 different threads:

1. COMPAQ IA-1
2. COMPAQ IA-2
3. eMachines EZNET 200

That way info related to the eMachines MSN companion could be more easily identified, and same for the other machines.

Perhaps you could also use a tread to discuss issues with the MSN companion software...but since this site seems to be more focused on putting other OS's onto these MSN companions, I don't see too many questions related to the MSN software (except those related to broadband support -- hence my reasons for saying you might need a 'MSN companion software' thread).

You can definitely boot from a USB Zip.

I got it to boot off of a USB DVD-ROM drive. The USB hard drive I tried would not boot. I also got a USB Zip drive to boot. All required that the jumper be shorted.

I can't figure out why the damn site went down, T35.com has been upgrading and lost it, I guess. I have only gotten the USB Hard Drive to load it one way:

You must have an EXTERNALY-POWERED Hard drive, no larger than 1GB. It must be FAT16 formatted. Then, you can make the DOS boot-disk from Windows, and then copy that disk's contents to the hard drive. Plug it into the 2nd USB Slot (Why, I don;t know, but it doesn't fail as often this way.) It sometimes works, sometimes don't, basically a 50/50 shot of it working on any given try, and you do have to short the jumpers and also have to make the correct changes in the bios. Hope this helps, and I hope to get the site back up soon.
