Ok, I used the detect.com proggie from www.mrbios.com to generate a bios image and description with the following results:

Program: Unicore Chip Detect v0.72 2000.03.10
BIOS Date: 03/01/00
BIOS Type: unknown
BIOS ID: unknown
Chipset: VIA 82C501 rev 4
Superio: VIA 686 rev 27 found at port 7h

For comparison, the only real diff (Other than BIOS) with an early IOpener is the chipset on those is listed as rev 3. This leads me to believe that the two units, at the BIOS level, should be nice and compatible. If someone's found a bios for the IO's that can do USB HD booting for instance, the iPaq should be able to as well. I've submitted this and the IOpener info to Mr BIOS to see if they can whip up such a BIOS for my unit. I'd cotemplate trying a BIOS from a similar mainboard, but I don't want to risk downtime while waiting for a reflashed chip to ship, this is my only iPaq. A braver soul may want to give it a shot and report back if they've got more than one unit they can put under the knife.

Somebody on the board mentioned that he had tried one of the iopener bios and it worked. It was probably a few weeks to a month ago now. I would like to try it also, but I only have the one ia1 and don't want to screw it up.

from inspecting what the UniFlash program dumped of the BIOS, it looks like one of Compaq's proprietary BIOSes, just hacked up to remove most of the available options. a chip-compatible BIOS with user-tweakable options would definitely go a long way towards upgrading the IA-1.

Welp, Mr Bios wimped out. As the device is a Compaq and initially had a Compaq BIOS they won't touch it with a ten foot pole. I then noted that I had also submitted info from the same hardware running the IOpener BIOS, which for some reason also doesn't register in their system. Net result is they may have an award bios all set to go on this hardware, but they won't sell it to me. Bah.

In other news, I have a test bed based on the same chipset as the IA-1, but on an ATX motherboard. : ) Happens to be a compaq with a more user friendly BIOS... hrmmm... anyone want to place bets on how well they'll swap? (Save for the LCD init problem)

Any luck with your BIOS research, Kurlon?

Lots of us here have unhackable units, and would love to be able to flash our BIOS's.

Thanks.

Ok, here's a thought.
If you can't mod the Flash, and it looks tough to replace or reflash, can you mod the
internal CF to become a Slave and the external to become the master? Compact Flash is supposed to look like an IDE device right?
So If the external looks like the primary boot then we should be able to boot from it
without caring about the BIOS.

It looks like pin 7 on the Sans Disk is CE!
CE shorted to ground makes the device the master. So if we cut pin 7 and tie ping 7 high (maybe use a 1k pullup resistor) and
check pin7 on the compact flash interface on the side, see if that's tied high, it probably is since it's a slave.. then short pin 7 to ground (the external flash will become the master) then we should be good to go!

I don't know if I have to do this yet, I didn't get my unit from Tiger Direct yet.

what's all this about 'unhackable' units? don't you just flip a jumper? or have they started throwing epoxy around, like they did on the i-opener?

The unhackable BIOS doesn't respond to the Compaq key after shorting the BIOS clear jumper.
