I have fought with mine for a few days now, using part.exe, sys.com, etc. and all I ever got with my IA1 was "Device I/O error". Well, I suspected it was a geometry error, but there is no way to turn that off in the drivers, so on a whim I deleted the partition in part.exe and did the INSERT and created a VFAT FAT16 LBA partition, marked it bootable, and sys'ed it. It works!

I used a PQI TravelFlash and a Mr. Flash 64M CF Card. My setup will NOT work with a standard FAT16 partition.
