Sound on Linux, part 2.

So, I have sound working under Linux, which is fine. What is not fine is the sound quality.. It's absolutely terrible. I haven't yet determined for certain if this is because:

A) The mp3 decoder sucks
B) The sound driver sucks
C) The sound hardware sucks

Has anyone else noticed this problem? If I lower the volume, the distortion on output is reduced, but it still sounds appalling. Since I bought this thing with the intention of turning it into an mp3 terminal in my living room, it would really suck if the sound hardware turns out to be useless..

You could always try a USB-based sound device. Not that I have ever tried these, nor have I done anything beyond testing the fact that sound actually works under Linux.

by default the gain is turned up to maximum beyond the point of distortion.
use
mixer vol 75
mixer pcm 75

and run it through an external amplifier if you like. makes a world of difference.

another option is an external usb->audio converter or usb-speakers which will bypass the crappy DACs altogether.

I already tried lowering the volume like I said in my first post.. It makes a difference for sure, but the quality is still bad. I've never heard of USB audio decoders though. I'll definitely look into that..
