Greetings,

has any one tried calling tech support asking how do you "backup" the system software? In the literature I recieved, we are entited to make a backup of the system software for archival purposes only.

here's what I'm thinking... if we can get tech support to tell us how to backup to CF, or even how to boot off of CF we should be golden!

do you think tech support would ship us a CF as a backup? how else would you backup & restore the unit?

as is typical with most of their laptop/notebook computers, Compaq formatted the internal SanDisk with two logical partitions, one at 15 meg, and the other at 1 meg. the 1 meg partition holds their 'recovery' software, which i presume attempts to download a known good image from the modem line... i doubt very seriously that Compaq will send you anything other than instructions to 'return the unit for repairs' . . . but, i could certainly be wrong.

Garfield, if it would help us get into the BIOS, why not give it a shot?

I wish somebody out there would tell us when the BIOS is supposed to appear. Before, after, or during the memory check???

press the compac key ( you only have to do it once) right after the cursor drops about an inch (right after memory test) to enter BIOS

The problem is the cursor never appears. I see the memory count and immediately after the memory count completes the message "162-System Options Not Set" appears and the unit reboots. No cursor. No cursor drop.

ok, since it seems like I have an "unhackable" unit, I decided to play with it abit and I came upon a "contact technical support screen"

It has a technical support number of 888-386-6497 and a customer service number of 888-765-2411

It also mentions a Support Engineer code, what is that about? maybe that would be our key to happyness

I simply attempted to dial without a POTS conntection and then I selected my issue is not listed here...

it also has product information:

your member ID:
product: MSN companion
version: 1.0
OEM: compaq
platform: clipper-x4
build: 10.06.15.03.10
build date: 12:22:35 06/22/2000
logging ID: unavailable
hardware ID: 1
hardware version: 1
upgrade ID: unavailable
upgrade date: none scheduled

I hope this is of help, let's all try to get this info and see if we notice any trends here...

support engineer codes are keywords that reset the unit to various states. for more information, read the message MSN Companion support codes versions 1 and 2 from chriscook posted here on 12-14-2001.

I played around with those support codes to no avail. The real question is, how does one change the version of the BIOS? I spent several says pounding away at the unhackable version. It seems pretty iron clad.

compaq developed and supports their own proprietary bios, and i haven't yet found the flash utility capable of reading and re-writing the entire thing successfully. if you're dead-set on changing the bios, your best bet might be to scavenge a similar/compatible bios socket and chip from a surplus motherboard at local swap meets / computer fairs / etc, then replace the compaq bios chip.

alternately, BadFlash.com might be willing to perform this 'enhancement' for you...

Well, I called 888-386-6497 and spoke to paul... I was not able to get much out of the guy but he did give me a compaq number: 800-652-6672 MSN comanion internet support has what they call an esculation team to do a forced upgrade where tech support fills out a form and they call you back...

---------------

calling compaq now: 800-652-6672 then opt 3, then opt 2... or call 888-302-7358

beware, these guys have caller ID setup so they _know_ where you are calling from even though they ask you for your name & number!

anywho, I spoke to Ron White of compaq's internet appliance department...

he says the brightness issue is very common... it seems like is related to the fact that these things has TFT displays that don't support the brightness option.

he says that you can not get in to the bios

he says that these things have what is called a failsafe option that is used when the machine is screwed up... to go the failsafe route hit "ctrl u" upon bootup, and wait 2-3 seconds and tap the "u" key and it should bring up a "dos" window

these things do support a broadband connection for which i will call msn again to ask what brands are supported.

----

calling msn internet customer care at 888-386-6497 then opt 1 and spoke to ryan

USB-Lan adapters supported
- link-sys 10txv3
- linksys usb 100tx100t
- d-link 10usb ethernet
- linksys usb 200ha
- d-link dnh-120
- net-gear 10x100mb usb home network adapter

must setup with dial-up first before using the broadband

apparently the brightness is standard be design for what ever reason...

I hope this helps, it was fun bull-####ting with the guys... hehe enjoy! :)

I called these folks from work so when I get home I'll play with mine.

I mean the cheapo displays do not have brightness where as the more expensive ones do.

TFT are active matrix (expensive) have contrast & brightness
dual-scan are passive matrix (cheapo) have contrast only

calling compaq ipaq support centre 888-302-7358, opt 2 regarding the forced upgrade... aka the failsafe option. (ctrl+u)

spoke to raymond rice, hit the ctrl u as the compaq logo goes away... to get to the modem settings page.

he said for compaq laptops, hit the f10 key or maybe the delete button when the compaq logo comes up... he does not know what to do if that does not do the trick.

he did sort of talk about the notion of hacking these units that will envole getting into the bios... he made a passing comment about slashdot he also mentioned about the CF slot on the side of the unit for future expansion... in terms of a sandisk, to back up the unit, you'll have to boot of the sandisk (cf) to get to a command prompt to copy the system software over. but he does not know how one would do that

I'll go home tonight and try the ctrl-u again, if that does not work, I'll ask them to ship me a new unit... i wounder what would happen if they do not get the old unit back? from talking to the guy, it sounded like they will only ship out the bare system without any thing else such as a keyboard. phooey...

Just a thought here..

There must be a way for tech. to enter the bios without opening the box up. could it be that the key needed to enter the bios is not on the (limited) supplied keyboard, like del or f1, and all that you need to do to get into the bios is a attach a normal keyboard ? (USB)

worth a try, is someone has one.

Root.

ok folks, I got my self in to the modem settings screen. the trick was to hit the "ctrl u" keys as the compaq logo goes away but before it loads the msn crap.

this is sort of what the modem settings page looks like: (see below in this post)

black text on a light grey window on a blue back ground.... ahh, reminds me of the Windows v3.x installation days, or that of DOS Edit

selecting Cancel starts the MSN crap
selecting OK, i imagine dials up to download the new image...

ctrl u, ctrl c, ctrl x does nothing that I can see while in the modem settings page...

to download or not to download? that is the question...

---------------------------------- Modem Settings ----------------------------------
UserName: [ uoobeosr1@reg.msn.com ]
Password: [ ******** ]

Phone Number: [ ] Tone Dialing: [X]

URL: [https://webcdownload.msn.com/clientman/clientman.dll?DownloadImage ]

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
< OK > < CANCEL >
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

that is basically what it looks like, contenent wise any way...

has anyone figured out how to make this download some other image? that retains this modem settings / fail safe page?

I'm thinking, if we can get a jailbait or some other image online, we could fake this thing in downloading some other image that includes tools to flash the bios... hehe

does this page look the same for you folks?

You can download the update file to your desktop and try to spoof the update site with your own web server.

http://webcdownload.msn.com/clientman/clientman.dll?DownloadImage?CurrentVersion=0&Component=Mariner;Compaq-1-1;409&SSN=1

Place a "?" after the url and remove the "s" from the "https://" then append the query information.

filename: clientman (no extension) 10.3MB

Well, I tried messing around with it, all I got was trouble. Sure, I got to see the neat screen that Garfield described, but then it wouldn't work. Got some sort of error screen, with directions to call support.

I rebooted, tried Ctrl-U again, this time, I was able to get back to the modem info screen. Reset the parameters to their original state, but now its trying to load an update of the software. I had to replug a telephone cord into it (just hooked up my Ethernet adapter today!), now its frantically trying to get the update, without a lot of success.

I think I really screwed things up....

I'm f@#$ed too, warning, do not click ok on the modem setting page unless you want to trash the OS and have to call tech support...

Error opening OS image file c:nk0 .bin
Error opening OS image file c:nk1 .bin
Error opening OS image file c:nk0 .bin
Please call technical support at (888) 386-6497

I still can get in to the modem settings page, so I might bite the bullet and run with the forced upgrade, now the question is what username, password and telephone number should I use... I'm tempted to use the info for the dial-up ISP i have kicking around when my broadband goes down...

any last words, anybody?

btw, microsoft's natural keyboard elite USB/PS2 works with the IA-1

Garfield, I got the same errors after changing my modem settings on mine, and for some reason it refused to connect to Microsoft's server to download the latest MSN. I downloaded the file with the link someone posted earlier, uploaded it to my own web site, directed the IA-1 to the file there and it downloaded perfectly. If you do the same, make sure you clear all the information in the "post" section, all you need is the URL.

Also, don't worry about writing down the existing post and url information, once the new MSN is downloaded it resets those fields to the original info.

Weird....if I use the Compaq-1-1 string, then I get a build date of 5/30/2000. (Or is it 2001? Now I can't remember...) So, then, is that hardware build date, or is something funky going on at MS? I called tech support & said I had the "error opening NK0.bin", and the guy wouldn't tell me anything about what to put in the Post Args...he said "leave that alone, the machine will set it itself.". Grr...

So...this is a bit cross post, but can anyone with a working Dlink DSB650TX check their build date & tell me what they have? I'm getting mighty frustrated... :)

I've got a LinkSys WUSB11 (wireless 802.11b) adapter on it. Works great! Also my
DLINK (Pegass (10/100 usb) adapter worked well too (max is 12MB on USB anyway).

more failsafe info:

MSN Companion Troubleshooting Tool FAILSAFE (Q274256)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

MSN Companion, versions 1.0 , 2.0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY
FAILSAFE is a feature of MSN Companion that formats its flash memory, dials the upgrade servers, and downloads a "last known good" flash image.

FAILSAFE should only be used under the supervision of MSN Companion Technical Support.

MORE INFORMATION

When should it be used?
Use FAILSAFE when the user has a core OS-level problem with starting the machine, per the following scenarios:
The user has been using MSN Companion, but during an overnight upgrade something went wrong. Now, whenever the user starts the device, they get the manufacturer's splash screen, and then the screen goes black; the device appears to be dead.

The user has already gone through the initial set-up experience and everything worked fine. Later, inexplicably, the device now "blue-screens" at every boot, never shows the connecting window, and never tries to dial

When should it NOT be used?
When in doubt, don't use FAILSAFE. FAILSAFE should never be used as an "I don't what else to do" fix, because the process takes over an hour.

Do not use FAILSAFE without the assistance of MSN Companion Technical Support. Call Technical Support at (1) (888) 386-6497.

In addition, FAILSAFE should never be used to troubleshoot a dialing problem. If the machine cannot dial, it cannot reach the FAILSAFE servers. For connection problems see Q278715 - Unable to connect to Web Companion

To use failsafe
The update will take about one hour on the phone, as the device downloads its software.

Unplug the device to completely shut it down, and then plug it in again.

When the manufacturer's splash screen appears press CTRL+U several times until the splash screen goes away and the FAILSAFE screen appears. It looks similar to a BIOS settings screen (see facsimile below).
