how does compaq service these...
time for a little critical thinking

how does compaq possibly service a device whos default boot can't be changed without shorting the BIOS? seems to me that either there is a key to force an alternate boot device from the *virgin* BIOS, or the IA-1 is able to interface with another device through USB or some means along those lines... would've it be useful to figure out how they're servicing them?

yes, i'm bumping this message, but here's another important observation...

for those of you who have taken your IA-1 apart, notice that there is a 3rd unused header next to the bezel connecter and the lcd connecter... what is this header used for? the board seems to be fairly standard as far as laptop boards go, the audio connecter, modem reiser (laptop CNR), and compact flash are all standard laptop components, the CNR modem is interchangeable with the modem in a friends compaq laptop. it seems to me that this 3rd unused header is probably for some kind of laptop component as well, but what? there are pictures of it elsewhere on this site, if you know much about laptops take a look and see what you think.

some have suggested it may be a notebook style connector for serial ports or a parallel port. don't think anyone has put a scope to it for a more detailed analysis, yet.
