putting an AMD K6-2 333 in the IA-1
replace your 266 with a 333

I picked up a amd k6-2 333 (1.9v) on ebay for $10. I popped in my IA-1 and it worked fine. However, since the fsb and multiplier are set on the mobo, it still thinks it is a 266. But, went into win98, and changed the fsb to 83.3MHz with the pci at 41.7.

Going from 266 to 333 isn't much of an increase, but it was cheap and easy to do.

I ran sandra sisoft (the 2001te version) and it came up with 525 mips. The rating is slower than what I got with the stock 266 (see a previous topic) but that is probably because those ratings were achieved on the previous version of sandra sisoft.

I would expect everything to be somewhat faster with the fsb at 41.7

sandra sisoft 2001te results
60MHz -- 377 mips
66MHz (stock) -- 435 mips
70MHz -- 455 mips
80MHz -- 514 mips (pci at 40)
83.3MHz -- 525 mips (pci at 41.7)

Just wanted to let everyone know that putting in a faster processor is possible. Getting a proc that wants 1.9v (so no mobo mods) is even better.

(slang english "miffed" - meaning mad, upset)

I was in a destructive mood tonight.... so I grabbed my k6-2+ 450mhz, and a knife, and according to the motherboard printing, ripped the resistors off the front and back of the motherboard to set the clock at 100mhz and the multiplier at 4.5..... nada.... zip...

system info in the bios shows no change... flyingbuttmonkeys linux image shows a 266 k6-iii (the k6-2PLUS appears to linux as a k6-iii).... the damn bogomips are still 532... the standard for a 266 processor... so linux saw the new type of processor, but the mhz stayed the same.... im casting a questioning eye at the bios..

questions:

a. did you mention a place in the BIOS to alter the fsb speed???? there is nothing like that in my bios at all. or are you refering to a program that does that???
b. anyone want to try to run a bios info program on the ia-1 and see what info we get back? i'd love to find a REAL bios for this system to flash onto it...
c. if you did use a program to alter the fsb speed, do you know of anything to do that in linux? (just found it here- http://freshmeat.net/projects/k6mult/

wa_bacchus,
I guess I didn't mention it in this thread, but I might have mentioned it somewhere else. Anyways, I have no idea how to do it in the bios but it should be possible to do it in the bios, because, you can use software to change the FSB. Of course, someone would have to actually write the bios. I wish there was a way to change the multiplier. There is no option in cpufsb to change it though.

You MUST use cpufsb and not softfsb. Softfsb just seems to time out on my iaone. Cpufsb works perfectly. In cpufsb, you need to select CYPRESS under PLL manufacturer, and then PLL type W156A. Then, change the frequency and hit SET.

It should work well - but naturally your mileage may vary - It has for me.

To verify the chip (I am not on my IA-1 at the moment), go to http://www.linux-hacker.net/ipaq and you can see the PLL chip with its numbers just legible. It is just above the CF socket.

I too have a K6-2/450+ cpu (the plus cpu's are getting scarce so I don't wanna kill it) and need to know if anyone has successfully done this mod. Putting it in & changing no jumbers shows it to still be a 266. When you run a plus model @ 2x it automagically fires up @ 6x internally. Are the multiplier settings on the bottom of the mb?

Hiyas HW hackers,

For all who care of are interested in this info, since i didn't find it on the BBS here or anywere else for that matter here it is:
I've recently purchased a Compaq IA1(eBay) and started to follow the recommended BIOS reset procedure.
During that i found some interesting info on the mainbord for replacing the CPU and match the clock settings.

On the Compaq decal is says :
Series number CE1000
Model number of the unit is 1456VQLIN-3

On a Decal next to the Compaq one :
model number 178358-001
Serial number 1V08FB73J6ZK

My IA mainbord numbers are :
PCB 41-060600
PWA 40-060600
Most lightly build in June 2000

This info is taken from the mainbord print so is as it is.

FSB settings on the normal side of the PCB close to the right rear of the appliance:
FSB RJ1 RJ2 RJ3 CPU PCI
1 1 1 1 60 30
1 1 1 0 66.8 33.4
1 1 0 1 70 35
1 1 0 0 75 25
1 0 1 1 80 26.7
1 0 1 0 83.3 27.7
1 0 0 1 95.25 31.75
1 0 0 0 100 33.3

Multiplier settings found close to the compactdisk port next to the Xtal and clock chip W156H :
R502 R500 R501 clock
1 0 ? 2.5
1 0 ? 3.0
1 1 ? 3.5
0 1 ? 4.0
0 0 ? 4.5
0 0 ? 5.0
0 1 ? 5.5
1 1 ? 6.0

Then next to the power connector bottom pcb, the CPU voltage settings
R509, R504, R505, R507, R508, for voltages of 1.7-1.8-1.9-2.0-2.1-2.2
I didn't note the settings though if i reopen it to t(f)ry some chips i'll get them and publish it.

So it should be possable to upgrade the CPU up to AMD K6 3d now 600(100)MHz in my IA1 box.
It will rquire some soldering work for the real HW hackers no problem but one could also attach jumpers or dipswitsches so you can change the settings for the CPU quick and easy.

With kind regards and respect,
Zathros
BeOS Deciple.
