Okay, I just won a Compaq IA-1 off Ubid ($60!) thinking it would be a challenging project. So, I figured I'd round up some information. Here are my questions:

1. Does WinCE run on the IA-1 with USB networking support?

2. Is the stock operating system WinCE in disguise/Can I somehow get around the MSN nonsense?

3. Even IF WinCE runs, is Jailbait the better choice? (with USB networking in mind)

4. Would anyone be interested in me creating a MSN Companion specific hacking site and trying to centralize all this info?

I got my IA-1 off Ubid aswell, I've had mine about a week and played a litle but had to box it up for a few weeks because I'm moving. Some answers to your questions from what I've read and what litle I've done.

1. WinCE will indead run on an IA-1 but you will need to make a custom version using Platform builder to do so, and WinCE does support USB eathernet addapters.

2. Yes the OS is a custom version of CE, but no there dosn't seem to be a way to just get around what they have done to it.

3. No one apparently has been able to get Jailbait to work with the USB adapters on the IPaq and they can't get the sound to work either, along with alot of other problems.

4. YES very much so, there is a good deal of info across this board but very litle centralization (there is other info in places other than the MSN Companion section).

Excellent... I have this week fairly free. I'll see what I can do for a page.

A thought came to me earlier today, would QNX do the job possibly? I haven't researched it much yet (looking into it soon) but it's free, and Netpliance once used it for the IOpeners so it has to compress down to 16mb. Has anyone else looked into this?

Also: How difficult is it to make a custom WinCE image, and how hard would M$ crack down on someone who posted one on a web page?

I had thought of QNX or possibly anouther small version of Linux other than Jailbait, I posted the idea here on the board a couple of weeks ago but no one ever replied to it. As far as making your own custom CE I don't think it is all that hard from what others have told me and I've read, you can get a trial version of WinCE from Microsoft for free you pay for shipping ($30) and it lasts for 60 days, the full version is over $2,000. As far as Microsofts feelings on posting a custom CE image on the web I have a feeling they would frown greatly apon it especialy since the image is being made so we can circum navigate using there internet service! But if you mad a custom image and wrote down directions on how to do it and then posted the directions so that anyone who picked up the free Platform builder could follow them and come up with a good CE version, there is nothing they could do. Oh and Platform builder is BIG a basic install is over 1gig and a full install with all the CE dev tools is over 9gigs so make sure you have a box prepaired before you start playing.

Well, I looked through the QNX site. They DO support USB ethernet adapters, only the Pegasus ones. Due to my limited knowledge of such things (this will be my first REAL *nix experience if I can't swing WinCE) I'm going to have to figure out how to make a custom QNX image, and how it all works. I'm going to see if any of my friends have a copy of the WinCE dev kit around. Has anyone figured out ANYTHING new??

I know I'm not really supposed to ask, but is there any you can hand me the CE Dev Kit on the side if anyone finds it? I have been trying to get ahold of it forever. I am trying to make a CE image for my Compaq and my E-Machines, even though they say it might not be able to be done on the e. Thanks muh, and my e-mail is hpviper@tconl.com
