i did not have that problem, but i did my install the easy way. i downloaded an image, but it and a clone program (dolly.exe) onto a 64MB CF card (should fit on 32 no problem, including the minimal MS-DOS to boot off it), then i just copied the image onto the internal 16MB CF, it was a perfect fit. the image i used is configured to boot off the internal compact flash (/dev/hda) and can be downloaded from... well, i can't find the darn page... email me and i can send it to you, but it worked great on the first try! got to lilo, fixed root passwd, rebooted, logged in, startx, beatiful (i almost cried). anywho, shadowsunrise42@yahoo.com if you want a copy of the image i used.
