ACPI/APM in Linux/X?

Has anyone here managed to get ACPI/APM to work under Linux? I would like to leave this thing on all the time, but the fact that the screen is always on is making this not feasable. I remember hearing that Windows people were having hangs/crashes with ACPI/APM enabled -- is this the case in Linux as well? Thanks.

Actually the ACPI power management works fine in windows, you just have to disable the steering drivers that get installed. Sleep mode does not work, but you can set the monitor to power off and the hard disk to power down after a couple minutes, which is pretty much the same thing.. just the CPU does not power off I guess.. which isn't a big deal AFAICT. Winamp plays shoutcast streams nicely when the machine has powered down the peripherals.. a real boon for my player as it is the kitchen music and recipe machine :)

That is similar to what I am doing. I have mine setup running Linux, xmms, and gaim, giving me a nice living room music player and AIM client.

I noticed that there is screen blanking, but the LCD backlight remains on, which is annoying. With ACPI in Windows, does the LCD backlight also fully turn off?

Yes the backlight turns off completely in Win98SE..and the hard disk powers down as well. Pressing the power button turns the machine off no matter what, even if you tell it to only enter sleep mode.. it could be sleeping I guess but there is now way to tell if it is really powered off or in a un-wakeupable sleep mode.

Hm... in that case, would someone familiar with ACPI possibly enlighten me in configuration options for this? Thanks.

ACPI sort of works under linux on the IA. One of the
ACPI modules will unfortunately clear your cmos back to
Compaq default also (grrr). So make sure you've flushed
CE out of the internal flash and have a multi-boot
loader in the internal flash so that you can still
boot from the external slot when you want to.

ACPI under linux still seems kind of immature, so have care.

Can someone using ACPI under linux on the IA-1 post what config options they used. Specifically I'm interested in avoiding the module that resets the CMOS. :)

Thanks.

avoid ospm_system.o. On mine it reset the cmos back to factory original and
I had to redo the whole short the jumper routine.

Currently I have linux in the onboard flash so even if the cmos gets
hosed I'm safe (grub set to boot from both internal & external flash)
