image of what? the origional MSN Companion software?

if you're looking for actual windows CE (ai: winCE 2.1, winCE 3.0, winCE 2000, winCE 2002, etc) then you're probably out of luck...

the IA1 (as with most 'net'pliances) have x86 processors (like you're average PC), winCE is built for ARM, MIPS and SH3 processors... you _can_ compile _programs_ made with the winCE SDK for x86, but that's only to run on the ppc emulator under win2k/nt, to my knowledge there are NO winCE platforms that use x86 processors, and therefore NO builds of the winCE OS for x86 processors (except the one built into the emulator, but that only runs as an application from within 2k or nt).

sorry.

You certainly can (and several of us have) build a CE platform that can be made to run on the iPaq. I have personally done this with both the CE 3 platform builder and, to a less successful extent, the Talisker preview. These images are not of much use though as no one has been able to get an ethernet driver running with it. Look through the threads and you can find all of the pertinent details.

You can download an eval of the Talisker (WinCE 4.0) Platform builder from the Microsoft web site. It will allow you to build an X86 WinCE platform. It's also basically drag-n-drop to configure it like you want, and, as others have mentioned, there is an internet appliance configuration.

X86 WinCE boxes, affectionately termed "CEPC" devices, are used extensively. Other than vendor specific hardware changes/devics/drivers and bootloader, all CE platforms are the same. It's a very portable OS. You can examine the source, even, from MS if you want to download it, under a shared-source license. I know for a fact that MS uses CEPC boxes internally for much of their testing on the operating system.

well... guess i forgot about the platform builder. =P oh well. here's exactly where to get it: http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/developer/downloads/default.asp think i might try it out myself for my casio e-115, kind'a dumb of me not to expect that their compiler would have x86 support. oh well. good luck.

Good luck with your Casio. The PocketPC OS is quite a bit different from the generated from Platform builder. PB is just a basic starting point for Windows CE devices and implementations. There's an insane amount of work that goes into turning a CE base configuration into a device. You'll have problems with things like a boot loader and the hardware specifics (LEDs, flash slots, etc), but who knows - may be fun.

I still maintain that an X86 CE-PC is the bst way to play with CE, and when you have it as you like, then move to the device itself. You'll find device work really hard (er - almost impossible) without debug boards and dev hardware.

well, it'll be a while until i have time to do a whole custom version of CE. for now, i'm just happy with teaching myself how to develop custom today plugins (i'm hoping to eventually make replacements for the standard items [calender, tasks, inbox, etc] if i can find api calls, etc for them) which will be fully skinnable. i know they've got skinning on pc2002, but there's lots of ppl running pocketpc and wince 2.x-3.0 that would like to have the same. should be a blast.

you are right though, using x86 as a start on a full ce build would be a great idea, that way i could keep it fairly portable (at least compared to dev'n it for casio e-115) and worry about hardware specifics later.

btw... i just double checked that link to developers downloads on microshaft.com and i'm not sure if they have platform builder avail. come to think of it, last i checked (about 2-3 mo ago) you had to get it on cd's, it was still 'free' but you had to pay about $50 or so for the s&h. that's prolly a good idea since just the ce-embedded toolkit and pocketpc sdk took about 3 hours to download over my office t-1 (which is the fastest connection i've ever used).
