I've got my first 128MB Flash image working
128MB image win98lite and 802.11 support!

I've got a 128MB winlite image up! It took one day! The trick is finding what you want to trade off. My linux servers have large
applications on them, including netscape.
I would really like to find a light weight
browser that supports java and flash. For now
I am using the old standard. ACPI works fine! I really wanted to start with a linuxdistro, but.. it looks like I'll need at
least a 256MB flash for that.

The idea is to have seperate flash per OS to run. I tried to scale the peanut distro down, compile the wireless support in, and fit it all under 128mb. iT WOULD work only
if I use the tiny X server. No features.
So, what's the leagalities about posting this image. It did take one day. The only driver I need now is for the internet modem.

OUCH! I am using all my outgoing bandwidth!
Quick someone copy my file somewhere else, I can only serve this out today. After tonight
I it's gone. I was getting hammered with 20
users at once! So I cappped apache to 5 users for now. I could not get out to the net! So... go ahead and copy to your site please! I'm going to need to delete it after
today since I can't surf the net. My netstats
show I'm cAPPED AT @300k on the upload. And My graph was flatlined at 300k up, so... I can't do this for long or AT&T is gonna bitch. So... I have to cap this at 8:00PM
I hope someone has a copy to mirror at a high speed site by then!

Cool, I will ftp it up to you and you can get it out. At&T has clamped the outgoing bandwidth down.. I used to get better bandwidth out.

Okay,

I created an incoming directory at ftp://ftp.skinner.net/incoming/ so you can upload the images you want posted... I will have to move it from there to /ia1 when its all done.

Hi,
I had to give the file a different name on
your ftp server since I could not overwrite the first atempt. It's called IA1WIN1.IMG
I use an IDE-CF adapter to read/write images.
Let me know how well this works. I'm going to try to create a more generic image next time (with usb wireless and 2 usb ethernet adapter drivers in /windows/system )
along with the inf file.

I just ordered my 256MB CF.

My second image is comming out better! I finally got the flash to take a fat16 LBA,
so now I can compress the image! I am creating
a test install on a hard drive.

Opera looks like the browser of choice for both Windows and Linux, this browser is pretty fast! So I'm going to buy a copy.

Here's the steps I took to create the windows image.

1. Buy an IDE -> CF adapter $19.00
2. Setup an old hard drive, if you don't have one you may be able to get a 540MB drive for $30.00
3. Create a 128MB fat16 LBA partition
4. Setup the rest of the drive with an extended partition , use the rest for drive D
5. format /s on drive c:
6. format drive d:
7. Download win98lite from the internet
8. Boot of your win98 cd, select boot from CD, select boot from CD setup
9. I burned a CD with win98lite and all the
drievers needed for the MSN companion, maybe
you can do the same
10. install the floppy or cd with winlite98
11. run win98lite, this will select install to D partition.
12. follow directions, you will be reinserting your win98 cd and the cab files will be installed to D: drive
13. run the win98program from your D partition
14. select option 1
15. After, when winlite98 setup runs and you select install type, select compact, but add
drivspace option
16 after 15 minutes or so install will be done.
17 After reboot and configure, run drivespace
18. compress drive
19. copy MSN companion drivers to C:\
20. install!
21. config networking and mount your share
22. When you install apps, use the mounted file system
23. don't forget subst a: c:\

I got to test my posted image today. It seams
that FAT16 drives do not boot on the IA-1!
I have a IDE-Flash adapter, I built the flash rom on it, complete with a compressed filesystem. well it boots fine on the AMD box tthat I built it on! It does not boot on the IA-1!!! I get an IO error! I then took the flash and used good old linux dd to transfer the image " dd if=ia1win.img of=/dev/hde " and after it transfered I popped it into the IA-1 and I am back in business! So the image is good!
I guess the next step is going to be a FLASH filesystem with Linux!

How did you prepare your 256MB flash? My 128MB works witout a problem, but I was trying to get the 256MB flash up until 2:00AM! I partitioned and formated the flash the same way I did for the one that is working. I installed just the system files to see if it boots.
My host computer that I used to prep the glash booted fine, the IA-1 boots and then
trashes a fat table enough so that it can't read command.com, Ip stuck the flash in the host that I am using to create the flash and sure enough the Fat tables are trashed.

How did you prep your flash?

All I did was fdisk, format, and then use Ranish to make it bootable. I'm looking at it now and the partion type is set to 'DOS FAT-16'.

I bought 98pro45 to install Millennium and I have thinned it out to 180mb (includes IE and hopefully all the drivers I will need).

I have it all the on the CF now but the version of 'command.com' is Windows98 and it would not startup. I receive the error 'MSDOS version must be 8.0' or something similar. I am now trying to get my local drive partition size to 256MB so I can 'dolly' the image to the CF.

Its a pain in the butt but I'm having fun in the process.

Hello! I've got my 256MB flash up and running windows98lite! For bells and whistles so far
I have Opera w/java, IE6.0 w/java, WeatherBug (pretty cool), Quicktime 5.0, WoldFlash (News ticker), WinAmp, PhotoSuite, 802.11b support on my LinkSys Wusb11, WinZip.
Some apps like PhotoSuite live on my LinuxPPC server. Now I guess it's time to take my old 800MB toashiba laptop hard drive that I ripped out of an old dead laptop and pick up an USB case for it . The drive will be good for swap and temp files.
I ran into one problem preaparing the flash.
My son use the host/bench box and set LBA in cmos, that's why my first image was bad, After I caught that I was all set.
Next order of business is to add the the rasmus linux image since there's a lot of features allready. I'm going to toss netscape in favor of a licensed Opera. Add xmms, And hopefully get some form of APCI running!

My most abject apologies... was called out of town in the middle of my setting up ftp uploads.
and moving from /var/ftp to /home/ftp (larger partition)

btw anyone using rh7.2 and wu-ftp. please consider using ncftd free for 3 concurrent users.

MUCH easier to install.

ftp://ftp.skinner.net/incoming is where to send that winimg. (if i don't track it down first)
ill move it to

ftp://ftp.skinner.net/ia1/

sorry again for the delay. to anyone that emailed me as well sorry for not getting back to you.
but the server is up and all you webmasters are free to link to it.
dual p3-500/40GB space on 100MB colo'd isp connection. please abuse it.
