Working Win98SE image for Microdrive (modified 0 times) stace Profile Okay, after a lot of twiddling, I got a working microdrive image I'm happy with. I made a .img mostly for my own benefit as a backup, but I'm willing to offer it up to anyone who needs a microdrive image (340MB). Some notes on this image... Devices installed: Video (800x600 16 bit) Sound (playback and recording) USB20 2.5" portable hard disk ( http://www.usbgear.com/usa/usb-20-note-drive.html ) USB keyboard and mouse DLink USB 10/100 ethernet adapter Software installed: Win98SE TweakUI Some other random programs. NOTE: some of these programs are installed as "D:\Program Files\(etc)" to keep the microdrive free of space. It autologins to me (with no password), easily changed. It will boot and work without the hard disk attached, though you'll get some errors. It also sets TEMP and TMP to d:\temp. All of these things are easily changeable. The best part is you get a bootable image (for a 340MB microdrive). If you're interested, give me some contact info and I'll point you at my webserver where I've got it up. I don't want to leave the info on here, as I don't know how long the image will be left on my server. I also want to regulate how much bandwidth gets eaten up. File size: 353,687,040 bytes. RE:Working Win98SE image for Microdrive (modified 0 times) stace Profile There appears to be some confusion, so let me clear this up. This is a 340 MB microdrive image. It will only work for you if you have a 340 MB microdrive. It will not work if you have a 1GB microdrive, or a flash card, or anything else. You get this image if: (A) You own a 340MB Microdrive (B) You want a working installation of Windows98SE for the IA-1 with the features detailed in the above post. This is designed to save people from having to do their own install. By uncompressing this image *onto a 340MB microdrive* you will get a bootable image that does everything outlined in the first post. You still need to clear your BIOS and set the CF slot bootable. This is designed to help people who (like me) don't have easy access to a Win98 computer with CF or PCMCIA with which one can run ranish or dolly. If you don't have a microdrive, this isn't for you. See other posts in this forum for the 125MB flash card, if that's what you have. I should also note that the installation does not include the Win98 cab files (I have since moved those to my USB hard disk, to free up space on the microdrive). Thanks. 01-16-2002 20:56:05

RE:Working Win98SE image for Microdrive (modified 0 times) jerryn Profile I'm interested in the Image! I've been using a 8GB hard drive to create my images before I dump them to flash. What I have been doing is create a 128MB FAT32 partition, format /s that partion, do a win98lite install to that partition (compact install), boot off the partition to see if it works, copy the drivers I need for the MSN to the flash. Remove the flash from my IDE->Flash adpater and insert it in the MSN companion, it boots and I config! What I plan to do with the 340MB image is create a 340MB partition on my 8GB drive, set it active, copy your image to it, boot, strip the executables, remove what I can't fit or don't need and copy to my 256MB flash. I used the PCMCIA slot in a Win98 laptop here at work. I used undisker to create the image file, but I believe it's a standard format. It doesn't seem like you can install from CABs, since the cabs alone are 170Mb, and presumably are compressed. The only way I can see doing it is installing the microdrive in a PC with a IDE/CF adapter and then using the CD-ROM and network card in the host PC to build the install - then image it. That, at least, is how I plan to try it. The only downside is that the install would be configured for the host PC, not the iPaq. Could anyone out there be kind enough to provide a screen shot of ranish configured properly for a 340mb iomega microdrive? I have been going in circles trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. I have a cf--ide adapter. I've used ranish to make it bootable. When I put it in the IA-1, initially, it updated the system configuration as it should have but it then rebooted twice and then got an error (like the disk wasn't bootable) I've had the IA-1 booting from a 64mb cf as well. However I have had problems with the install of the video drivers. I tried the 4 in 1 via drivers but my video card still is displayed as standard VGA controller. I am only able to use 640x480 with 16 colors. If someone can help me get the video working to 800x600 with 16bit in win98 that would be great. RE:Working Win98SE image for Microdrive (modified 1 times) gwad Profile Hey Stace, You have done well...I have both 512MB and 1.0GB CF cards and all that I have been able to setup is Win95B with USB support. Every time I have tried to setup Win98 it "blue screens" me right at the time it starts setting up the hardware. Win95B was a cake walk but now I am having a hard time finding drivers for that particular USB system. I would love to have a copy of your 340 MB microdrive image. I have a valid Win98SE license. Also, you might want to consider using the Trident Cyberblade i7 driver for the video, it has 32 bit rendering and works great under Win95 anyway. Also the audio is VIA AC'97 Audio Codecs.
