OK, I picked up a Compaq companion from a return at work for only $15. This was great. I brought it home with a linksys USB broadband adapter and hooked it up to my linksys Cable router. I then plugged in and turned it on not knowing what to expect. The unit still had the customers account setup in the unit. It did NOT have the password which I did not want nor did I want to use the account. I noticed the sign in as GUEST so I did that using my hotmail.com address and the system worked BEAITIFULY. I was still worried that somehow there account may get charged or something. I can't see how, I was using my cable modem for access, my hotmail account and password, and I don't know there password or account info, just the default login name on the screen. After reading on this board, I found out how to ERASE all account info and start over so that I could assure myself that I would not mess with the orginial owners account info. Of course after doing this, I now find out that it is asking for a MSN account or sign up for a new one. I don't want to sign up for a MSN account, I have to many other ISP's already. Then I got desperate and tried the FAILSAFE command. Now you can guess I have the errors of no OS when booting and the message to call tech support. Of course when I do this, they ask for my MSN account info, I tell them the whole story which goes in one ear and out the other and they tell me I must first have a MSN account. I have gone back and forth with this and turn to you guys for help. Is there a way to use someone else's account to setup the unit and then never use that account again, and continue to sign in as GUEST for me?? If so, how can I get back up and running without the MAIN account, or do I have to get a account from MSN, and if that is so, can I sign up for the free 30 days and then cancel, but the use the GUEST option as long as I don't erase the account or failsafe the device?? Thanks everyone for any help. I think that what time I got to use the unit it was really great. It is almost tempting to get a MSN account just to play with it for a while.
