Help with CF and WinME
can't create a bootable CF from ME to save my life

Since I think I am the only moron left in this world with WinME, I deserve what I have gotten so far. Here it is.

I can not create a bootable CF from this POS. Since Format /S and Sys X: are not valid commands in ME, I have been trying to find creative ways to get this sucker going. (By the way my final objective is to get BeOS running, but I will take anything over MSNC.) I have been trying to cobble some of Rasmus and Yuan's instructions along with Chris3D's.

The BIOS reset was cake. I have a 128 Viking CF, and Memorex CF read/writer. I have a Kodak DC280, so I started by following Rasmus's cheat and formating the real fast way. (I have also tried formating in Win.) I run Ranish and set everything. From there I have taken the system file from an old W98 laptop over a floppy to the CF card. I then put the BeOS files in place.

Everytime I boot to the external, I get the regular cursor drop, highlighted cursor on upper-right for a second (all with the compaq logo), and then I always get stuck at the blank screen with the blinking cursor in the upper left corner. I can not get beyond this.

I have tried a number of times to run through this process without a shread of success. If anyone has an idea of what I am missing or a sure-fire way to format and add system files from ME, please put it down here for me.

Sorry, this post is not intended to help you... =D

I'm just sitting here in complete disbelief that Microsoft would get rid of format and sys, but still make such an unstable OS. What a castrated bastardization of Win98. =P

One thing that I could not get around when trying to get my CF card bootable was issuing FDISK /CMBR 2 (where 2 is the disk number). The PART program mentioned in other threads doesn't seem to create a valid MBR or me, only FDISK would do this. I also had alot of trouble as FDISK seems to get easily confused if Windows detects your CF card as disk 3 but your primary disk is disk 1 and there is not disk 2. The only way I can reliably get my CF card to show up as disk 2 is to only plug the CF card reader into the box after it is all the way booted up, and I must reboot if I want to reinsert the card after it has been removed. Otherwise the CF will show up as a high disk number.

All that said, you still have to do the SYS command to put the boot files on the CF, I can't see any way around that. I has to build a WIN98 box especially to do this.

Do you still have your laptop running that you copyed the files from????? If you do and have usb ports or a pcmmcia CF adapter. Put partion manager on it and format the CF card as a vfat16. (I had to format it as a vfat16 to get it to boot.)

Go to Dos prompt from windows98 and type sys c: (CF Card drive letter):
Pull the CF card and see if it will boot on the Ipaq. If it does then you got it licked.
Just copy the Image you are going to load into the Ipaq along with the program you are going to use to move it and have fun with your new toy.

UUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHH where did all that smoke come from.

He's using WinME. There is no 'sys' command in Windows ME.

I have been at this for over a week. I am about to hang myself with the keyboard cable.....wait it's wireless.

Anyways, I have exhausted all my ways to create a bootable disk from ME. So, I have a friend do it for me on his laptop. It works for him, but nothing for me. I just want to check a few things before I go totally crazy.

BIOS is all taken care of, don't need to worry about this.

1. Formatted CF card.
2. Used Ranish to partition to two sections, MBR, and DOS Fat-16.
3. Added Command.com from a 98 disk.

I have gone through countless variations of this including straight from Rasmus's site of format /s, Ranish, etc.

Isn't this all that is required to make a DOS bootable CF?

I am at the end of my rope. Does a Dolly'ed image include everything required to boot with these things? I have not gotten tot he dolly steps yet, so I am not familiar with it. Does it create a file that can be exchanged or does it only move from one drive to another?

I couldn't ever get it work either. What I had to do was get a bootable DOS image from keith721 and dolly that onto my CF. If you want it just let me know and we can set up something on icq or I'll put up my FTP site. It's 32 megs.
There is also a 16 meg version out there but I haven't been able to get it yet.

GRISHNAKH,

I'd love to get that via ftp. Please tell me where.

I have a buddy trying to get my cf bootable tonight. He has the PC card adapter. I think that is the ONLY way to go. Unless you can get a hold of an IDE-CF adapter. I can't find any around here and am too impatient to order one. If you would rather email the ftp site, matt@singledigitgolf.com. I appreciate anything you can help me with. Is your bootable image the Jailbait or BE image?

Try formating it as a VFAT-16 not a fat-16. I could not get it to boot as a normal fat-16. I had to change it to a VFAT-16 with Ranish.
