How to install WinME on IA-1 with CF-IDE Adapter
Keep on getting "Invalid Operating System" after WinME Setup rebooted my IA-1

Hi! I have a problem getting the WinME install with my Hitachi 9.5mm HD. I have followed the instruction to setup the CF-IDE adapter(from Advance Tech). The IDE HD seems to be working fine. I got a 5GB HD, if I partition and formated the HD > 2GB, the IA-1 will complain Invalid Operating System. So I partition and formated as 2GB. I copied all the WinME Cab files into the HD boot up the IA-1 in dos mode. The WinME Setup started and copied all the files. Once WinME setuo rebooted the IA-1, the "Invalid Operating System" message comes back and I can not finish the WinME Setup. I have also tried finish the WinME install on my desktop and put the 9.5mm drive back to the IA-1, still "Invalid Operating System" and can not boot from the HD (but the 9.5mm HD boots fine in my desktop). I did use the part.exe to make sure the MBR is correct. It will be appreciated if anyone can give me some help on this. I have been stuck to get this working for a week.
Thanks!

I was able to get WinME running on a 256MB CF by configuring a separate system first and then ghosting the image onto the CF. You will need some of the install .CABs but you have allot of room on the hard drive for that - I had to use 'sneaker-net'. I have not heard of any one using Ghost but I could not get Dolly to see my CF. I'm sure Dolly was not the problem, rather my old laptop I had used for the setup.

This is exactly the same problem I had with two 6GB IBM drives. There was no obvious solution except to try another brand drive. A 10 GB Hitachi (model DK23BA-10) worked for me and is still running today. It seems that Windows setup does something to the master boot record or to the partition table after the setup files are installed (before the first reboot). All I can say at this point is to try another drive brand or model. Ouch! Iknow this is expensive, but until someone figures out a fix, selection of a particular drive is a crapshoot.

I think you are running into a different problem. If your partition gets nailed after you boot the ROM image on your IA-1 and the image worked/looked fine on the host system that you were using the IDE-CF adpater, then,
I bet your host system is set to use LBA. Because LBA isn't used on the IA-1. I ran into this problem. Since the test jig is actually my 1y year old's, he was doing a test with QNX, and he enabled LBA, I didn't catch it when I made my first 256MB image, I installed the LBA based CF image and yes the
unit booted but you get error messages such
as "Invalid command.com, please specify command interpeter. You reboot and WHAM partition hosed. That's typical of creating the image with LBA and using in the IA-1. MAKE sure LBA is off on your host when you create your image.

No, your description of the LBA problem is not what we encounter. It doesn't explain why some drives work and some don't. Further, you can reboot into DOS as many times as you want using one of the "non useable" drives and get a normal C:\ prompt on the IA-1. No error messages appear. It is only after Windows loads the setup files that the problem appears.
