Is the IA-1 display backlit? I've seen reference to contrast and brightness controls so I assume yes, but... Anyone care to confirm this. Also, anyone have links for the win9x dirvers that will work for this box. One ( or more ) of these running Win9x from a Microdrive sounds pretty cool!

Funny you should ask about the display of the IA-1. Today I plugged mine in, it started to boot up normally, and when I tilted the screen I heard a pop, the screen went blank and I detected a burning metal smell. Hmmmm. Thought it was the processor at first but it seems as though everything works except the screen.

I am (oops I guess I should say was) running it with a microdrive and it worked well. I wonder if I could send the IA-1 back to them to have them fix/replace it? What is the warranty on it? I got mine way back in March.

The panel has buttons for contrast and brightness. You can vary the contrast quite a bit, but the brightness has only 5 or 6 settings I think - thus it only makes a small difference.

The drivers are here:
http://www.linux-hacker.net/downloads/cyberblade-i7.zip

Once you install that, and if you run windows update, it should tell you that a newer version is available. I have a newer version (can't tell since the screen burned out) which has the numbers 5495 (going by the name of the file) in it if that helps.

So I guess that means that it does have a backlight? You didn't really say(g)... The page on the IA-1 at Compaq says 3 year warranty, but if you've had it open and/or broken any seals or other marks that are used sometimes to detect disassembly ( NO disassemble! ) you might have problems... At $100 bucks a pop, buy another and send this one in for warranty, it can't hurt to try.

Heres the Compaq link:

I grabbed the display drivers you linked to; are there any other hard to find drivers that you might be willing to share? My 2 IA-1's will be here on Monday(g) and as soon as I can get a Microdrive I'm diving in!

Unfortunately, I don't know if it has a backlight or not. If it does, I don't know how to turn it on/off.

I called compaq over the weekend, and I received a replacement unit on Tuesday. It works fine although the screen was not as nice as my previous one (which cost me only $30). I think it has one dead pixel on it, but that's no biggie - 1 pixel being dead is certainly better than ALL pixels being dead/not working.

I am going to send the burned-out screen one back to them tomorrow.

I also have the drivers for the modem and sound cards. If you give me an email address I will send them to you. Or if someone is willing to host them, that would be great also. I would love to find a keyboard driver/program to be able to use most/all of the extra keys (especially the forward and back keys).
