Guys, need your help here.

I've got THOUSANDS of 3C460Bs and want to make them work with the IA-1 in native MSN mode.

Any suggestions? You figured out to make anything work with Audrey, here's the new challenge!

Thanks guys!

My linksys usb 10bt version 3.0 works on my IA-1 (using MSN) no problem except the green light indicating a connection does not light up (it works while connected to the same IA-1 while using win98.

My linksys usb 10bt version 2.1 works great on my audrey (after I used macparse).

I believe that the linky and the 3com 3c460 (don't know what the difference is from the 3c460b) have the same kawasaki chip so we should be able to the same thing but in reverse, i.e. make the 3com adapter work on the IA-1 by using macparse.

Can anybody verify this? If anyone wants to send me one, I will certainly give it a whirl.

ranman,

You mentioned using MSN with your USB adapter?

Is a subscription to MSN required, even if you're providing your own broadband connection via USB?

Yes, I have used the usb adapter to connect via my LAN, which is now unfortunately operating via a 56k modem, since my new place can't get DSL. I signed up for MSN a couple of months back so I could get the IA-1 upgraded to msn companion 2.0. They will charge you $9.95 per month for access using the USB adapter. Nice of them, eh?

However, you can sign up and get a few months for free. So you could do that and then hope in a few months that someone has come up with a fix.

Make sure you read their disclaimers, especially if you set it up for broadband access, and then reconfigure for dialup, you get a hourly charge. That's nice of them too.

i called compaq help line on friday, to get information that was strangely missing from their web page for the IA-1. seems there was a footnote/reference "1" near the term USB Ethernet adapter, but at the bottom of their page, the references started with "2". anyway, very nice lady from Compaq takes my information, and e-mails me the text of their "Compaq Web enabled help" article.

maybe with a little codeman-style device digging and snooping, we can determine which of these supported USB ethernet adapters (if any) may be cloneable from the 3Com 3C460B devices that Lonny's got thousands of...

TDSS0160 - MSN Companion V2.0 Supported Hardware

Summary
UPDATE: Due to unforeseen changes in the QFE update, the Compaq IJ650 printer will not be a supported printer on the Internet Appliance.

This article will help identify the hardware that is currently supported by the MSN Companion V2.0 Operating System. The hardware listed below is compatible with both the Home Internet Appliance IA-1 and IA-2.

Introduction
The MSN Companion V2.0 Operating System will support a variety of external devices. These devices include printers, network dongles/adapters, HPNA (Home Phone Networking Alliance) adapters and USB
mice. Theses devices are "Plug and Play" and do not require separate device drivers. The drivers are built into the operating system and are updated by MSN through the Nightly Management application.

Information
Below is the current supported hardware for an iPAQ Internet Appliance that is running the current operating system of V2.0 with the latest QFE (Quick Fix Engineering) patch. This may change as MSN writes new drivers. *Note: The QFE is only being applied to the IA-1 until further notice:

fyi:

- i was a bit worried about being able to connect my IA-1 to my network, but not anymore!

using Linux, the IA-1 can use the kawa-based NetGear EA101 out of the box, along with a number of other pegasus-based USB Ethernet adapters...

- i didn't have to sign up for MSN or upgrade to 2.0 in order to connect to my network!

- i'd be willing to bet that those of you attempting to install a 'lite' version of W98se won't have to either! i wish you good luck, and will follow your efforts (i've got a spare 192MB CF)... using Linux however, only requires a 16MB Sandisk CF!

i got two of the 3COM 3C460B units from TigerDirect, and opened one up. it's using the ADMtek Pegasus II / ADM8511 USB chip, and there's data sheets and utility programs to change the Vendor_ID and Product_ID values at:

http://www.admtek.com.tw/Download-bottom.htm#ADM8511

maybe we can fool the IA-1 into liking other Pegasus II based adapters

Hello keith721

Just wondering are you able to use the modified 3c460B with IA-1 in native MSN 2.0 and how?

Thanks in advance!

my best advice would be to search for Linux driver source files for the Pegasus and Pegasus II chipsets, most likely a file named 'pegasus.c' internally, it should have a table of Vendor ID and Product ID values (VID and PID) which correspond to different model adapters from different vendors, all using the same chip/chipset. you might also find help on the web at the linux-usb project (can't remember where it was, but it's out there... google is your friend ) where they list the VID/PID values for many different products.

once you've found VID/PID values that should work with MSN 2.0 (because they're from one of the 'supported' devices) then you can use the utility programs from the ADMtek web page to change the values in your 3C460B adapter. once you've successfully done this, your MSN 2.0 software will only know it from the VID/PID values, and not care whose brand name and model name are on the exterior plastic shell.

good luck...

okay - here's the page I was thinking about. it shows VID and PID values for most of the USB ethernet adapters out there...
http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdevcat.php?id=16

and here's some values you might try . . .

Compaq VID 0x049f PID 0x8511 iPAQ network 10/100 ethernet Pegasus II
D-Link VID 0xabc1 PID 0x2001 DSB-650
Linksys VID 0x066b PID 0x2203 USB100TX
PID 0x2206 USB Ethernet
SMC VID 0x0707 PID 0x0200 EZ Connect 2202 USB/Ethernet

First time to post. I hope I can get some sort of answer.
I already updated my IA-1 to MSN 2.0, and I tried to connect my IA-1 with my broadband connection. When I plug in the 3com USB Ethernet (3C460Bs), my IA-1 can't recognize the USB device. I tried to use the Convert.exe (download from ADMtek website) to change the VID and PID (change the vendor file by using wordpad, and then press 1, 2, 3 and 4). Again, I tried to plug into IA-1, but still I can't get it recoginze the device. No matter I tried to use Compaq, Linksys or Dlink VIP and PID code, I still can't get it work.
Did anyone try it and works? Is any scret behind it? What possible I did wrong? Please Please Please help!!!
Thanks in Advance.
