Difficult to install K6-2 500?

I'm new to the IA-1 and love to modify stuff :) I promptly pulled it apart and began to look it over. I have a spare 500 lying around and thought about installing it in this unit...I have spotted the Vcore SMT resistors, multiplier resistors, and FSB resistors...my question..has anyone succesfully changed the SMT parts to hardwire the settings on the mobo? I have never done any SM soldering...what is required for this small of work? Thanks

I know that 500 will drop right in and run without changing the voltage. I have a K6-2 500 2.2v running but it is only clocking as a 266.
If you can get windows running on it you can use CPUFSB to change the frontside bus. I have read where other ppl have tried to change the resisters on this things. There are several threads talking about it. I have not heard of anyone getting it to clock over 266.

Not sure it could be hidden settings in the bio's locking the processor speed.

UUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHH where did all that smoke come from.

I understand that it will physically fit..but did you also change the frequency and multiplier on the mainboard itself? otherwise the 500 will run at 266 also..default 4x66mhz

What's the problem? Just change the multiplier under software control as part of the boot script. Check out k6mult and similar on freshmeat or google...
Should work for any of the K6-II+'s.

well, no go, fried it :( seems that the k6-2 500 drew too much current for the mainboard and/or PS..I set everything perfectly, even tripple checked my work under a microscope..screen came up for about 2 seconds and then went black..so for those of you adventurous like me check on electrical specs first..just because it fits don't mean it will work :)

I don't give up easily, got a new IA-1 already, this time I didn't mess with the smt resistors at all, I am leaving the multiplier and voltage at defaults, 1.9v, 4.0x..I soldered some jumpers to the empty pad next to the smt freq resistors and on the PLL pins..it works, I can change the frequency at will now..entered the bios settup and confirmed..I will just run 400/100 on my 500 processor....I am waiting for my PCMCIA CF adapter, got my 128mb stick already :)

So you got your 500mhz CPU running at 400mhz on the IA1?

Could you document how you did that, with pictures? I'm sure numberporn would host them...

well at first I had the jumpers soldered in...but it seems that with the PLL lines tied directly to groud it did not want to boot..so I pulled them off and soldered a 2.2k resistor on RJ1 and RJ2...boots up into bios and under identify says 400/100 :)
I will open back up my box and take some pics..still waiting on my CF adapter

I would really appreciate it if you could provide detailed instructions regarding how (and where) you installed the jumpers and how you plan on upgrading the RAM. I'm really new to this, but I am eager to disassemble and modify my IA-1.

Are you guys sure these boards are running with a CPU core voltage of 1.9V? According to the datasheets, the hard minimum is 2.05. 1.9 would would be well below spec for a real K6-2. The K6-2+ can go from 1.4V to 2.1V. Has anyone actually measured the voltage on the core voltage pins?
