New to Ipaq and Hack
Hackable vs Non-Hackable

I purchased two of these from Tiger Direct. How do I tell if my units are hackable or non-hackable. After reading the board yesterday, I went home and did a ctrl-U during the fade away of the COMPAQ logo, now my machine says call customer service. Is this a good sign? I want to be able to browse a home intranet for home automation control, and not have to pay MSN their fee when the free 6 months goes away. Is it do-able? From what I read, these things seem to be locked up tight.

Did you reset the BIOS?

Do the units say "iPAQ" at the bottom right corner of the screen? If so, they're not hackable. If they don't, you should be fine; another way to tell is that hackable units show a blinking cursor during the boot process, and unhackable units do not.

See the directions elsewhere on the board for the procedure if they're hackable; the Control-U works on all the units, but just erases the builtin MSN system and gets you ready to download the upgrade from MSN.

I did the ctrlU as the COMPAQ logo was fading away, and made the mistake of moving down through the page. Now is says to call Customer Support. I called them on Monday, but they have not called back yet.

The units do not have any markings on the plastic, they are plain Jane units. So that is good thing.

What I want to do - I just want a simple browser on the units. I have no intentions of using the MSN service. I don't want it to call in for updates, as none should be needed. I just want to create a simple web browser to do home automation control through a home intranet. I see that some of you have installed Linux on their machines, and have enabled the mouse. Do people like that have a browser? I noticed the new website today for numberporn, and resgistered there as well.

Yup! Anyone running any of the jailbait hacks has Netscape, though it's not too wonderful, it works for what you'd need. A bunch of us are working on getting different, more optimized browsers working on our own builds...

Hopefully I'll get numberporn updated tonight too, but I'm having some issues pulling myself away from SimGolf. :)

Oh yeah, and on a complete off topic note, what kinda home automation are you running? I have a few x10 kits laying around doing nothing, would like to see what other people are doing in relation to home automation with internet appliances.
