The BeOS images are highly usable.. they support 100% of the inbuilt hardware.. sound.. volume control.. "Internet keys"... Lucent modem... Internet and Mail leds... USB Mice.. I don't have a USB network dongle so I couldn't say about any of them. I heard that Compaq sold the clipper in Europe, so hopefully there is a list of supported devices.
The software is basically BeIA and Opera... Everything you are supposed to see is Opera. The whole interface even and UI are done with html/javascript/cgi
/bin/cpq_led controls the mail/i leds
The be2.img seems to be some sort of development version.. You can press Alt-Q and quit from the browser. You will see the BeIA "desktop". From there you can run bterm, Style Editior, and Wagner (Opera). I used bterm to uncover /bin/cpq_led and play with some permissions, allowing me to edit some files with Style Editor. So far I've changed the settings in the /BeIA/custom/special_keys/map (guess what those do), and changed some of the javascript for the UI. There are also some basic command line tools.. ping.. telnet.. ftp.. wget?.. zip/unzip.. etc.. No ssh tho..
Also of note in be2.img is the script on the desktop called something like make_release_image. I ran that and some dialog boxes came up indicating that extra files were being removed and the image was being cleaned. Then it rebooted, and I could no longer Alt-Q to the desktop. My guess is that it's removing all the extra tools and removing all the user specific settings. So you can change the UI (code/graphics/buttons), add drivers (if you can find them), run the script, dolly the image, instant custom BeIA appliance.
I'd really like to try midori/qtopia/konq on mine. This should hold me over until I get that all compiled/configured.
Hope this helps
