Clipper image on the IA-1?

Is anyone currently running the BeOS Clipper image on their IA-1? How usable is it? Does it support the LinkSys 100BT USB Ethernet device? So far I've only used Linux on the IA-1, but I've always wanted to try BeOS, so this might be my chance. I'd like to know how usable is it though -- for instance, does it have a good browser, decent shell, SSH program, etc? How does it look? Anyone have any experience here? Thanks.

The BeOS images are highly usable.. they support 100% of the inbuilt hardware.. sound.. volume control.. "Internet keys"... Lucent modem... Internet and Mail leds... USB Mice.. I don't have a USB network dongle so I couldn't say about any of them. I heard that Compaq sold the clipper in Europe, so hopefully there is a list of supported devices.

The software is basically BeIA and Opera... Everything you are supposed to see is Opera. The whole interface even and UI are done with html/javascript/cgi

/bin/cpq_led controls the mail/i leds

The be2.img seems to be some sort of development version.. You can press Alt-Q and quit from the browser. You will see the BeIA "desktop". From there you can run bterm, Style Editior, and Wagner (Opera). I used bterm to uncover /bin/cpq_led and play with some permissions, allowing me to edit some files with Style Editor. So far I've changed the settings in the /BeIA/custom/special_keys/map (guess what those do), and changed some of the javascript for the UI. There are also some basic command line tools.. ping.. telnet.. ftp.. wget?.. zip/unzip.. etc.. No ssh tho..

Also of note in be2.img is the script on the desktop called something like make_release_image. I ran that and some dialog boxes came up indicating that extra files were being removed and the image was being cleaned. Then it rebooted, and I could no longer Alt-Q to the desktop. My guess is that it's removing all the extra tools and removing all the user specific settings. So you can change the UI (code/graphics/buttons), add drivers (if you can find them), run the script, dolly the image, instant custom BeIA appliance.

I'd really like to try midori/qtopia/konq on mine. This should hold me over until I get that all compiled/configured.

Hope this helps
Julio

DCMage: Has anyone really tried? A quick scan of BeBits turned up this:
http://www.bebits.com/app/2670

which may in fact work with my Linksys device. One I get a little more time to play with it (probably this weekend), I'll do so and report my results. Seems like if you can get to a shell, you should be able to install a new network device driver.. I think BeOS would be very nice on the IA-1. From what I've heard, it's lightweight, extremely quick, and multimedia oriented, which is exactly what I'm looking for on my IA-1.

kemster,

Just wondering have you actually made the LinkSys USB ethernet adaptor working?

Thanks,

Since the Pegasus USB NIC driver was compiled for BeOS R5, it won't work with the Clipper image. The Clipper images is BeIA, which is based on BeOS R4.5.
I contacted the developer of the driver several times for the source code but he has not responded at all.

The only way to run the BeIA browser is to boot off a microdrive with BeOS R5 and the BeIA DevKit installed. Then you can run the Wagner browser (basically the entire BeIA interface) from within BeOS and have USB NIC support as well.

Thats not completely true, you dont need the devkit to get the Wagner browser.
you can just get wagner here http://beos.home.lt/files/files/beia_pkg.zip

This is, as I said, just the browser.
