DGMage has posted the new midori image and build kit on ia1hacking.com. Netscape is replaced with Opera and Dillo in this version, so there should be a few megs free for whatever you want. I put rdesktop on it, but I don't have a terminal server to test it with. Let me know if it doesn't work. Same goes for anything else that's messed up since I just finished making it and I haven't been able to test it completely.

Thanks ia1hacking.com for hosting it for me.

Thanks Wes. It looks good, but I can't get it to work with my NetGear EA101 USB NIC. The first Midori image worked OK, except the NIC would never start on boot, I'd have to remove and reinsert it. Then I could run pump and eth0 would be set up properly. It should use the kaweth module, but that doesn't seem to be present on the image, so it can't even be loaded manually via modprobe. Couldn't find rdesktop on it, but with no network, that's kind of a moot point... 8-)

I'm not sure what the problem is there, but it looks like Bob Dougherty could have made some progress with that his latest release. His site is http://66.92.8.179/m4i/ My image is a modified version of his. I'll download his latest build kit at some point and see if I can integrate the changes he's made.

I just checked and you're right. Rdesktop isn't on there. I thought I put it on, but I must have been remembering the version I accidentally erased. The next version from me will have it.

Wild,

Is there a link or a howto or something quick to explain how to use the build kit?

Thanks again for all of your work.

If I can get time I'll write one up a full one for the page tonight (just started playing with it last night, I'm gonna build and image with flash, Opera 6 TP3, and rDesktop tonight and put it up), but it's REALLY simple if you just need to add a couple of files.

Just throw any new programs you want in the /root/whatever/ directory (that's the main compilation point), and then run the build script. =D

WEll, nevermind on the new image thing... Opera TP3 is 2 meg bigger than Opera 5, and crashes like crazy on my desktop box. *sigh* And I can't get Opera 5 to even see the plugin. :(

Does the midori image have smbmount? I want to use it to do the picture frame thing with images on a win2k box.

Also, I saw a posting that the kaweth driver isn't there. I also have the EA101 -- is there a chance of including the kaweth driver in a future image?

Thanks!

First - thank you much for the latest Midori. It's a great image and Opera is _way_ more stable than Netscape could ever hope to be. The Netscape in the other Midori image would leak so much memory the system would become unusuable...

There's only one problem I've found with the image - the opera settings aren't preserved during write-back (save-config in the web admin). Is there some way to tag this so that it happens? When I use the box at work to play with, it's a pain to have to re-enter all the proxy settings and such each time I restart the browser. I'd really like to be able to config it once, force writeback the settings, and be done with it.

I, too, would love to see SMBMount included in the image so I could use my WinXP boxes as servers for MP3 files and for JPG images. I'd gladly sacrifice the Dillo space for it, as a second, much-less-functional browser seems redundant and a waste of space, even if it's only a couple hundred K...the drive is only 16Megs, and space is a premium.

Ack - one last request:

I'd love it if the screen blanking were configurable as well, or at least shut off. LCDs don't suffer burn in, so there's no point in blanking the screen. I couldn't seem to edit the xconfig, and it'll be a pain if I use it as a picture frame. :)

First of all, pretty much all the files are in the "root" directory. All that stuff gets put onto the disk when you run the build script. By the way the script is not mine, Ingo Pashke wrote the script and Bob Dougherty updated it. The kernel directory contains an image of the kernel and a configuration file. You can compile a new kernel with the configuration file and put it in the kernel directory, but the files to compile the kernel are not included. If you have any specific questions, you can ask me but that's the general idea.

All your suggestions are good and I've been meaning to do most of them anyway. The next version will have smbmount (provided it fits of course), rdesktop, will save the opera settings, and hopefully better kaweth support. I know dillo isn't necessary but i'll leave it in for the hell of it since there's currently a good bit of space left. I think i'll either drop the screen blanking or add a cool screensaver (and make it configurable). Until then, you can stop it from blanking with "xset s off".

ok, has anyone tried the 3com usb 3c460b with the new midori image? i just tried it, and althought i heard here it worked under jailbait with the pegasus drivers i get "error establishing link, check cable" and "network is unreachable". the link light comes on, so apparently it's getting power, and it blinks every now and then, which means it sees the hub...any ideas? has anyone else got this adapter working under midori and how did you do it? thanks

Well, it's partially on the error of those of us that run the IA hacking pages too... Hopefully I'll finally get a few new articles cranked out tonight that will cover basics.
