I found some that I can get for cheap ... are these little buggers as hackable as the IA-1?

If they're not - hey, I'll take it as a challenge. I'm trying to break the Divx encryption. (The phone line, silly - I'm not going to take on the discs 3DES encryption. That's suicide.)

Hi Merc,

They have:

200 MHz NSC GEODE GXLV CPU.
32 MB SDRAM, soldered down.
16 MB SANDISK, soldered down.
2 USB sockets.
1 PS/2 socket.
1 CRT socket.
1 RJ11 Modem socket.
1 Sound jack socket.

Typically come with a Power brick, PS/2 Kbd, and a USB Mouse. There are 2 LEDs (and the Power LED) on the front.

Looks like the pads are there for a SODIMM socket to be able to add RAM, but you'd need the socket (ain't cheap) and then hope the BIOS can handle the added RAM.

So unless you are good with a soldering iron, the expandability of the box is very limited.

You be the judge...

Heck, at 2 for $20, I don't care if they're not hackable.

Besides - I got two. I fry one, I got a backup. :D

/me wonders if anyone else has considered the feasibility of these things as Counter-Strike or other low-end LAn servers...

Those sound like they'd work great as a firewall box... Where'd you find them? SHARE! :)

As long as the shipping does not cost more than the units you might have a buy there...any left?

My thoughts exactly ... slim system + Linux = nice little firewall/router.

Where did I find em? eBay. :) Two for $20.49 plus shipping. Very nice. :D

(For those interested, shipping was $18 for both via UPS.)

Maybe I'll share these once I get bored of them - or if I hack one, I'll sell one. :)

Merc,

Did that price include the power bricks, Mice, and Keyboards? At least those can be reused.

The only way you are gonna get a Network connected to this thingy is via a USB NIC, which equates to rather slow performance if you are going to try and turn it into a firewall. And, there is no way to connect any kind of storage to this thing, unless again of course you use some sort of USB drive.

But good luck, and please keep us posted as to your progress! Perhaps I've overlooked something that will make these things useful after all!

Yeah, I got keyboards/mice/bricks with these. That's why I jumped on the little buggers as soon as I saw em. A little 1337 sniping action, and they were mine.

Far as routers/firewalls, you have a point about the USB NICs. However, I've ran a Serious Sam DS off of a Pentium MMX 166 - and it was hovering at about 50ms ping. Imagine bringing these to a LAN party - "OK, this one is Serious Sam, this one's Quake II ..." - heheh. (BTW, QuakeII is now opensource - download and start coding this mofo, I'm going to slam this onto Dreamcast ASAP.)

I'll keep everyone posted. :)
